Title: Thornton Schofield
Post by: nicurn1986 on Thursday 24 February 11 15:14 GMT (UK)
Thornton is my great grandfather.  Can't account for him between abt 1898 when my grandmother Nellie was born and abt 1941 when he died. Can't find him, his wife Alice Beatrice Booth, or daughter Nellie in 1901 census.Any ideas?

Have you checked the Thorton Schofield living in Huddersfield in the 1911 census?

Sorry I can't make any further suggestions as I don't know how old he would be or where he was born.

There is a death for an Alice B Schofield in Huddersfield in 1919, age 41, so the right sort of age for yours. I can't see any sign of them in 1901 - they must be wrongly transcribed somewhere.

1911 - there is a Nellie of the right age, in the same household as the Thorton found by MaryA.

Modified - think I made a mistake there, sorry.

Hi Nicurn

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you got more information like his full  name or do you know his birthdate or even where he lived? Any information you have is required for others to search for him. Anything you know just throw it at this thread and there will be someone who will help, but very flimsy information we are left guessing.
regards

Thornton Schofield was born in Wortley in 1876.

In 1911, the person who has been transcribed as Thorton Schofield is in a household with the family name of Todd, in Huddersfiled.

Alice Beatrice Schofield is in Wortley, apparently by herself.

Struggling to find anything at all in 1901.

Thanks for the replies.  I know Thornton Schofield was the son of Albert Ernest Schofield and Sarah Maria Shaw. Born 1876 in Stocksbridge. Married Alice Beatrice Booth in 1896 in Wortley. Have seen him described as a black sheep!  My mom vaguely remembers hearing that Thornton and Alice weren't together much but doesn't kmow why.  Their only child Nellie, my grandmother, emigrated here in 1928 and supposedly had nothing to do with her father after Alice died around 1919. Thornton died in the early 1940's. I can't find Thornton in the 1901 or 1911 census(on ancestry.com) and can't find Alice in 1901. Found her posssibly in 1911 as a servant for a family named Knowles. Can't find Nellie in 1901 or 1911. Thanks for any help and hope to find some cousins out there!

Keyboard86, how were you able to find this? When I look on ancestry.com I can't find the same record. Should I be looking somewhere else? Thank you.

Well done Keyboard! I spent ages yesterday, using every conceivable way ( except the right one, evidently ;)) of searching for these three people and I knew, just knew that they would turn up as lodgers or visitors in someone else's house.

But why would Thornton be S Schofield? I am sure they are the right people but how very awkward of him to have the wrong initial. And it definitely is an S on the original image!

I am also fairly sure that the person down as Thorton, whom Mary A found in 1911 is the right person and that Alice Beatrice Schofield is in Wortley in 1911, with neither Thornton or Nellie.
Have you tried  www.1911census.co.uk   to search for them. They are definitely there, though I don't have credits to look at the full document and even if I had, we aren't allowed to post 1911 details in here.

Thanks so much for the help. I'll try that other website to look for people. I've never been to the U.K. and hope to make a visit there to see the towns my ancestors are from.

Hi Nicurn

You seem to have been helped with your questions so thought I would have a look at Albert just to take you a generation or two back.
I think I have found your Albert Ernest christened 25th November 1866 at Bolsterstone which is near to Stocksbridge with parents
Albert and Elizabeth.

Upon my search I did find some variations of the name Schofield which included Scholefield so its easy to not find them on the census with only a slight variation of the names.

I then looked for Albert Senior and think this might be him
Albert Schofield christened 10th November 1835 Hathersage, Derbyshire
parents are John and Hannah

Hathersage is only 10 miles from Sheffield to the west as are Stocksbridge and Bolsterstone.
Hope you have a good visit as you will love Yorkshire and the people. We are very friendly - laugh.
Take care and hope you find all your information
regards Sandymc
