Title: DEDMAN - Sawbridgeworth
Post by: wamwig on Thursday 24 February 11 13:34 GMT (UK)
Hi All

I'm wondering if anyone has an Elizabeth L E Dedman from Sawbridgeworth in their records, she married my Gt uncle Harry Marriot Smith in 1914 and he died of wounds received at High Wood on the Somme in October 1916.

No one in the family seems to know of her and the one person who might have known something, my grandmother Harrys sister, passed away a good few years ago now.

Harry is buried at Dernancourt and is commemorated on both the memorial at Hertford (where his mother lived) and at Sawbridgeworth (presumably where he lived with Elizabeth. The Dedman family were from Sawbridgworth and I would like to know what happened to Elizabeth after Harry was killed.

Thanks

I have been researching SAWBRIDGEWORTH for many years and have
Elizabeth L E DEDMAN born 1895 on my chart. I have a possible but very likely line going back 3 generations from this.  I have no ongoing line for her which I believe you are more interested in.  If you are interested I can give you details but as I have just joined RootsChat I am not sure how to go on from here.

Hi

I've PM'd what i have found, as there is a (albeit remote) possibility that the lady may still be alive.

There is a double entry in the registration so her(his) name may not (only) be what you think.

Hi SaWbfisHES

Thanks for that why not PM (private message) me with what you have?

Have searched my 80 plus DE(A)DMANrecords and I can't add any details to what you have already but I can go back 3 generations on Elizabeth Lilian Emma in SAWBRIDGEWORTH if you want that

If you check the Christening records on Ancestry you will find ...Harry Marriott Smith was the father of two Girls...you may be able to work forward from there.

Hi Woody

I had seen on freebmd that there were two Smith girls born with Dedman as the mothers maiden name between 1914 (when they were married) and 1916 (when Harry was killed) and I went to HALS to try to look up the Christening records although those years for Sawbridgeworth seem to be the only ones not on microfilm!! Hadnt thought of looking at Ancestry, I shall look further, fascinating, looks like cousins my father never knew he had!

Thanks

That is fantastic, thank you so much it helps fill in a little bit more for me hopefully Margery/Margorie will have had children, we knew nothing and we are only 10 miles away, incredible!

I think those dates are close enough

Thanks again

Yes I have, think I will drop them a line to see if they want the information I have, chances are if we didnt know anything about them then they dodnt know anything about us! Its been a bit of a day for finding out things today as I guess they will know what happened to Elizabeth after Harry died.

I have been researching my father's family history and came across this lady. It took me a while but it seems that she married my great uncle Edmund Sarsfield Roche in 1920  and they lived in Hertford. My dad says he took on responsibility for the 2 girls but knows little else - I will ask him again! Uncle Sarse died in 1954 so I don't remember him! Hope this helps! May have more detail if you want it.

Hi Diane

Thanks for that, it all helps to fill in the blanks, my father says his mother (Harry's sister) used to regularly visit a woman in Hertford, this may have been Elizabeth, as my father never knew Harry had been married. If you can find any more it would be gratefully appreciated.

Best Regards

Anthony

I'll do my best seeing dad Fri possibly! The info you have regarding Margery & Kathleen correlates with mine. I think Margery died in 2002 and that she had 3 children James, Brian & Marion as far as I can find out through Ancestry.
