I am seeking information about James Smith/Smyth who married Alice Gainsford around 1810. I think he served in the British Army and could have been posted to India.

Unfortunately no, only that he had one child who was born in Dublin in 1817.

Ah - so possibly we are looking for Irish records then. the moderators might move this to irish board if that is the case.

I believe James Smyth/Smith was in the army, possibly in the 41st Regiment of Foot. If this is the case the regiment were stationed in Ireland in 1816 - 1820. Before that the regiment was in the USA, Paris and England and after 1820, in England, Scotland and India. I guess that is why tracing him is so difficult.

I am also seeking info re Smyth and gainsford. Daughter Elizabeth m. burns in India and burns family moved to England.Elizabeth then moved with children to Australia, father William burns not in picture, presumed dead.

Elizabeth Burns was my great, great grandmother and I have all the information about the family from when they arrived in Australia. I believe William Burns died around 1855 as two of the children were put into a boarding school for the poor in Liverpool. At the time of her marriage her name was Smith (as shown on records) and have traced several James Smiths in Army records but have got no further. Maybe the National Archives in Dublin would have the record of her birth.

Hi Sammy,
Sounds like you have looked at the military records pretty thoroughly. I did this with the Indian Records for Burns and his marriage. I haven't found confirmation of his death. I am a great grandson of Elizabeth Enderby/Coad nee Burns married John Coad. I agree we need to look at the Irish records if we are to get any further

What denomination were this Smith/Gainsford family ?
The National Archives in Dublin has records for some Church of Ireland parishes, but most are held in the RCB Library in Rathfarnham. Historic records for most of the RC parishes are available in the National Library.
Many parish records (both RC and CofI) for the city area area available, free of charge, on www.irishgenealogy.ie Note - Church of Ireland baptism records from this time dont show mother's maiden name.
Most of the barracks in Co. Dublin would have been located within the city, or quite close-by in the suburbs - e.g. Beggars Bush, Portobello etc

I need some help with this. I believe Elizabeth's father was in the 41st Regiment which was stationed in Ireland from about 1816-1820. She was born in Dublin in 1817. The family were not RC but I don't think they were CofI either. As her father was in the Army are there any particular places to look for information?

If the family were some other denomination besides RC or CofI (which was equivalent to CofE) it going to make it much more difficult to find a possible baptism for Elizabeth. Few of the records for other denominations are available online.
