Title: *COMPLETE* Jean or Jane ?
Post by: brynsmum on Wednesday 23 February 11 19:17 GMT (UK)

Hello

Can ayone tell me whether the names  Jean and Jane interchangeable ?  I have found a birth record for Jean  but she seems to be known as Jane by southern family members?

Is this possible or are they likely to be different people?

Thanks
June

In my family, Jean and Jane are entirely interchangeable. It makes searching very tricky at times, especially when you add Janet to the equation!

I'd say that you need some proof but if all the other details match, the likelihood is that your Jean and Jane are the same person.

Yes, Jean and Jane are the same name. You should always look for both. It sometimes helps just to put in J for the Christian name when you make a search,  as some indices will then show both.

In my experience with my Scottish ancestors, I would also add Janet to the equation! All three seem to be interchangeable - most frustrating!!  ::)
