Title: Richard HARVEY 1832 St Just-in-Penwith to Australia
Post by: whiteKat on Wednesday 23 February 11 06:26 GMT (UK)
Seeking information on my 2nd Great Grandfather Richard Harvey born in 1832 in St Just-in-Penwith his family residing in Bojewyan. Richard was a tin miner and came to Australia sometime in the early 1850s. His father was Edward and his mother Mary Rowe.

Richard married Margaret Canning in 1854 in Victoria, Australia. Margaret was born in Dundonald, Ayrshire in 1835.
I have searched many sources in trying to find when Richard sailed for, and arrived in Australia. I believe his port of entry to Australia was Adelaide South Australia.

Can anyone offer any assistance in finding Richard or offer suggestions as to where I could further research? Where did he live in Cornwall? Did Richard travel to Australia alone? And on what ship did he travel?
Any help will be greatly received.

I will look more closely later when I have more time, but an initial glance only shows one Richard with father Edward in Cornwall on the 1841 census, living in Paul. The wife in this family is Elizabeth.

What was the occupation of your Edward?
(the 1841 census Edward is a fisherman)

Hi Ruskie,

Thank you so much for your help. I do not really know Edward's occupation but a think he too was a miner.

(great resource Ladyhawk  :))

If you have Richard's Australian marriage certificate does it say if his father Edward is deceased?

You say Richard married in Victoria in 1854. What leads you to believe that Richard came to Australia in the early 1850's? How did you narrow down this timeframe?

Richard’s Marriage Record states Edward his father is a miner - so I am assuming he is still alive in 1854. It does not say deceased.

Evidence suggests Richard arrived in the early 1850s through records obtained of his hospital admissions.  I have his death record and he died 27 August 1879 at 47 years of age of stomach cancer. I know there are some inconsistencies there with religion and addresses but on checking street names Richard did live in the two streets mentioned. I don’t know about the religions!

That's very useful, thanks whiteKat. So 1852/53 for a year of arrival. That's good news.

He should be somewhere in England on the 1851 census in that case.

I don't suppose you have him on the 1841 or 1851 censuses do you?

Another question I'm afraid:

What leads you to believe he arrived in South Australia?

Have you dismissed this arrival in Victoria:

HARVEY RICHARD
age 23
month NOV
year 1854
ship CLARA
book 10
page 395
(age and year of arrival fit quite well)

Ah, these also appear on the same ship:
HARVEY JOHN 21 NOV 1854 CLARA 10 395
HARVEY MARY A 23 NOV 1854 CLARA 10 395
HARVEY PRISCILLA 22 NOV 1854 CLARA 10 395
Do they ring any bells? Age similarity is curious ...

Hi whiteKat,

Cornwall Census is Free Online

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html

1841 Richard is with his parents aged 9 at Callartha St Just. Edward is a Tin Miner. In the household is John ROWE a Mason  (Mary's father perhaps) HO107/144/8 Folio 17 Page 14

Do you have Richards Death Certificate? It should provide quite a lot of information on him. It should tell you if he was ever in SA. The only arrivals I am spotting in SA were married.

Richard HARVEY aged 47 father Edward mother Mary ROWE Victoria 1879/6943

I have been unable to find Richard or his family in any census - have searched and searched. It all comes to a blank unfortunately.

Richard appears to have a brother Edward chr 1829.

Kris,
whiteKat said s/he has his death record (cause of death etc) - presumably this is the certificate?

PS. Looks like Kris and Ladyhawk have found them in 1841.  :)

Thank you all so much - your information is amazing. It is all helping to put the picture together. I didn't think of a different spelling to the name Harvey! Wonderful.

On Richard's Marriage Record it states his usual address as 'Adelaide' as is Margaret Canning's and they were married in May of 1854 so don't think it could be Richard on the ship Clara - but thanks.

Also have found a death of an Edward Harvey from scarlet fever aged 5 in St Just - could be Richard's brother hence no Edward on the census of 1841.

No, obviously not your Richard on the Clara.  ;)

I'm having no luck finding Richard in 1851 ...

I found this Edward HARVEY born 1829 but don't know if or what the connection to the Moyle's is or if it's the son of Edward & Mary Harvey

MOYLE, Edward M 60 1781 Cornwall Tin Miner
MOYLE, Mary F 60 1781 Cornwall

MOYLE, James M 20 1821 Cornwall
MOYLE, Edward M 12 1829 Cornwall
MOYLE, Martha F 15 1826 Cornwall
HARVEY, Edward M 12 1829 Cornwall

I can't see Richard either on 1851 census

No me either. Maybe Richard was on his way to Australia by then and the rest had died. I will keep looking.

That is interesting about the younger Edward - the year is right for his birth. This gives food for thought and a rethink of his possible death.

Hi whiteKat,

If you use the free resources you will find no problem with the census entry either with the name or the residence.

A Richard arrived in SA in 1854 married was having children after your Richard was married in Vic.
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/epaminondas1853.htm

Another arrived in 1850 but he lists as a Butcher from Dorset.
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/stag1850.htm

and this one with wife Jane
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/neptune1853.htm

(only 3 I am spotting in the timeframe. No sign of Margaret CANNING arriving)

a Mary but no Margaret

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/oregon1851.htm

Still they may have arrived as unassisted immigrants in which case it will be unlikely they are named.

Cheers Kris  :)

Re:  Richard HARVEY and Margaret CANNING – arrival in Australia
Hi whiteKat,  I have just joined RootsChat.com. I came across your chat regarding Eliza Ann Harvey whom I have been chasing after as Beyers not Beyer. I extracted the name from the birth certificate for Mary Jane Harvey because she signed as informant for the birth details.
Richard and Margaret Harvey are my Great Great Grandparents.
I have gathered almost all the BDM’s for the birth families of Richard and Margaret and their son John and Elizabeth Ellen Harvey (nee Wates). They are my direct line from Richard and Margaret. I refer to my John as John2 in order to distinguish him from his brother John who was born/died in 1866, one year before he was born.
Richard’s parents were Edward Millett Harvey and Mary Rowe. I believe they came to South Australia via Plymouth on the Duchess of Northumberland departing London 30 July 1847 and arrived Port Adelaide 29 October 1847. The captain was Benjamin Freeman.
Edward’s name was recorded in the ships’ log as Edwaid Misset Harvey instead of Edward Millett. It would appear that the loops in the LL’s were written too low so they were interpreted as SS’s. The reference to google is:

South Australian Deaths - 1836 to 1850 - Barry Leadbeater of Family History South Australia records the death of Edward Millet Harvey as aged 43 on 12 October 1849 at Kapunda, South Australia. I since have purchased a copy of the said death certificate but it does not show where he was buried.  I have this problem on the back burner.

I was able to purchase a marriage certificate from the Birth, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office Adelaide for the widow of Edward, Mary Harvey to a William Sansum. However I cannot locate where either Mary or William Sansum finally ended up. I will continue searching for all 3 graves.

1. I am also currently looking for anything on Margaret Canning. What was her true age, and is there a birth/baptismal certificate available? How did she come into Australia? Who was with her?  I have been exploring Canning Families that came into Australia hoping that will provide something concrete.

2. I am also looking for what happened to Mary Jane Harvey? Where did she end up? There is no recorded Victorian death certificate in that name or anything close to it. I spent a lot of time trying to find her. My father mentioned to me once that Eliza was supposedly fond of Mary Jane so I suppose it is possible that she may have asked her to move to Sydney to be with her once their mother died (22 Sep 1911), then their sister Margaret, Mrs Patten (21 Nov 1917) and sister in law Eliza Jane Harvey (3 June 1921) all died.

I refer you to an article that I came across which includes a Richard Harvey, Miner, Kapunda, South Australia. Just Google in the following details. It is from a TROVE Digitised newspaper,  South Australian Register dated Thursday 7 March 1850
