Hi, Jools,
Is it possible to try it on another computer?
That would narrow down whether it is the drive, or your machine.

The problem was with the hard drive .
I am a bit of a techie nincompoop and always hope for the best -I had used the hard drive to back up work and to store photgraphs and documents from my tree .
it contained work that I had spent many hours scanning and documents and files that other researchers had been kind enough to share with me .It itself was not backed up in anyway .
the lesson is to back up the backups I have been quoted £400 to extricate the files !

Ouch! No chance it's still under warranty? ??? :-\ :-\
My "working" tree is on one drive. I copy this to a backup drive, every weekend. I copy this, via a reliable (so far!) memory stick, to an old laptop.
So that's four locations, and I'm considering getting an external drive, as well.
As an added precaution, I'm keeping my fingers crossed! ;) :D :D

make sure that one archive medium is located offsite - a fire and everything goes !

Picasa seems to store quite a lot of stuff online.
Seems to me we can't trust any of these back-ups, they can all go wonky. Online, or on paper, seems to be the answer.
And I know some people don't like it, but tribal pages is another back-up online for the family trees, and it stores pictures as well, although (without checking) I think that may cost a small fee.
