Title: Locating Death inquest reports
Post by: Foresthamlet on Tuesday 22 February 11 13:30 GMT (UK)
My Gt. Grandfather William James Brown, worked as a pipefitter at 'Messers Brothertous ?' Jam factory at Litherland, Liverpool when on the 3rd October 1915 he was involved in a terrible accident and was showered in Steam..

He survived for approximately 3 hours but died shortly after in Bootle Hospital.

I have a copy of the death certificate which states that an inquest was held on the 6th October 1915 and I was wondering if there was any way of getting more details of what happened..somehow.

Many thanks

Chris

Have a hunt around for the nearest libraries and try to find out if any have a family/local history dept.

As you have a precise date they should be able to check any local newspapers of the time for a piece on the accident and/or inquest.

I've been able to do this kind of thing in the East Midlands and Lancs and it only cost a couple of pounds on each occasion.

The survival of coroners' reports is patchy, as they are not required to deposit them in the local archive, and when they do the records are closed for 75 years after the event, no longer applicable to a 1915 inquest of course! The best source of such reports is in the local press, but be prepared, the reports are usually extremely graphic and detailed.

Looks like it might be Brothertons at Litherland, which was a munitions factory slightly later during WW1 http://eprints.worc.ac.uk/384/6/ChapterFour.pdf and prior to that the Brotherton's factory site at Lanstar was a tar distillery (could it say tar, rather than jam on the death certificate do you think?) with a lot of nasty residues http://epppublications.com/Documents/09-3-1.pdf

Really glad I read this topic, I have been wanting to get my Great Grandfathers inquest report as he was crushed under his own cart aged 23yrs and lived for 6 days, there was a inquest.

Can you phone them for  copy? When i looked at the site couldn't see a link for reports

The direct phone number for the Local History dept @ Crisby library is shown on that page, and if you click the Crosby library link there is also an email address.

Remember the caveats about deposition of coroners' records and the 75 year closure. Newspaper reports are the better bet.

Yes thanks I new about the 75yr thing, it don't apply as the incident was in 1870.

Have tried to find a report in newspapers....no luck :( maybe it was never reported by the news

Does surprise me you were unable to find a news report; hope the inquest report is available.

You know where and when he died from the certificate. Try the local reference library and ask for the local newspapers for that period. If they are filmed you should get immediate access, if they are originals they may be stored off site and notice will be needed to make them available.

Hello Chris,

My father was Herve Brown (son of Elizabeth Briant and William Brown) and I am looking for more information about our family tree. I don't know much about this side of the family but if you could shed any light I would be grateful.  I had an Auntie Francis who lived in Sheffield so are you related at all? Regards, Anthony

Great, you've now got a post count of 2 so if you are related you can exchange personal details on the personal message system.

Fingers crossed.

If you aren't related, start a new topic and the chatters here will be delighted to try and help you further.

Don't forget to add in dates of birth, marriage and death and location is always useful especially with the surname you are researching.
