Hi there, just got a 1911 match on one of my relatives - a Charles Trenchard from Pontypridd.
His occupation was given as a Theatre Manager, but doesn't mention where.
It looks like the house they lived in has also gone, although the street is there (Pencerrig house, Pencerrig Street)
Anyone out there able to give me an idea where to start looking (i.e. directories, organisations) to see where he could have worked or what he was involved in?
Thanks in advance as always!!!!!!!

Hi Pencerrig Street is within walking distance of Pontyptidd Town Centre. They had the Town Hall there which was a theatre and later a Bingo Hall.Maybe try Pontypridd Observer the local paper which I think you can get a link from Rhondda Cynon Taff B C. They might have back issues with adverts in. Cheers

Looks as if there could be a photograph of Charles Trenchard in "The Old Photographs Series. Pontypridd" and it says you can purchase a copy!

Am popping down the library later today to see if they have a copy - I'm fairly hopeful that Charles is the grandfather of Tom Jones' wife
The surname isn't common in South Wales, and only seems to crop up in Pontypridd.
Will be just my luck that she'll be related to the Trenchards in my tree, but just not on my side of the family - no chance of a trip to LA for me then ;)
-
Hope this might help.
Tom Jones' wife is Melinda Trenchard whose parents were William Henry Trenchard and Violet May Jones.
William's father was also William Henry Trenchard who was married to Selina Summers (my grandmother's sister).
As far as I am aware Wm Henry Snr and Selina had 5 children (Hubert K, Vivian J, Leonard J, Leslie D and Melinda's father Wm Henry Jnr)
No mention of Charles but they are all from Pontypridd.

Thanks for that, but already had confirmation that Melinda's father was Charles' brother.
The same person confirmed all of melinda's uncles and aunt too
You're not related by any chance are you?

Thanks for the extra information Maria. I had Melinda and Tom Jones, and knew that Charles managed theatres, but didn't have any info on Vivian managing the Paladium.
not sure how they got into that line of work since their grandmother's family were all farmers from Somerset, and their grandfather was a horse trader and then owned/ran a lumber mill!
All interesting stuff to flesh out the bones though ;)

Distantly related through my grandmother's sister it would seem.
I believe that the Trenchards were also estate agents at sometime!

It would appear that any wealth has travelled along every other line of the family bar mine ;D

Thanks for the PM - nice to see that Lily Jones was still alive (she would have been in her 60's at the time of the funeral). Narrows down when she died for me

ABSENT FROM WORK
AND 'UNSATISFACTORY REASONS' GIVEN.
when leslie s. trenchard, age 21, of darren park, pontypridd appeared to answer a charge of failing to present himself for employment at a factory, it was maintained that he had absented himself from work, as a semi skilled fitter from december 27 1941 to january 30 1942, without a satisfactory reason.
hr was directed to continue with his employment and warned that failure to do so would render him liable to a heavy penalty. however he failed to comply with with the direction and was sent for on march 27. he then explained to officials that he had been absent through family business which had to be cleared up.
the national service officer was not satisfied and proceedings were taken.
trenchard said that his little girl was bad and the mother was bad at the same time.
fining trenchard £7 and ordering him to pay two guinees advocates fee.
the stipendiary said it is a monsterous thing that you behave as you do.
saturday may 2nd 1942
