My grandfather (Lawrence Edward Hall) was born in Wexford County 6 Oct 1878.
His father may have been Patrick and the mother Elizabeth.
He migrated to Malta and started a school where he taught.
He emigrated to Australia in the 1920's with his wife and four children.
I'm interested in:
- where he was born
- whether he left Ireland under suspicious surroundings
- when he left Malta
Thanks

It might be worth trying to follow up details of Lawrence in Australian records, as I believe death certs usually contain useful details on family (e.g. parents names, place of birth) which would help your search.
You can search the Irish BMD Index for possible birth to see if there are any likely matches. See : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)
I had a quick look at the index but didn't see any good matches. The two closest matches seem to be in 1881 in the Gorey registration district, and one in 1875 in the district for Enniscorthy

not sure if that link will work for you, but there are several Lawrence Hall's on the 1901 Irish census, available online at National Archives of Ireland.
One of them is age 20, father Patrick.
