Hi Everyone,
Hope someone out there can help. I'm looking for any Bastardy Records for a John Johnson b May 1841 in Tattenhall whose mother was Martha Johnson. Trying to find his fathers name. Not given on his birth certificate or his christening records. Looks like he was raised by his grandparents as their son as he names his Grandfather as his father on his marriage cert.
Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,
I have looked for these for someone in my own family, though it was an earlier date, 1797. The Record Office has a microfilm but there is nothing much on it.
I think you will be lucky to find anything.

Hi Jo,
I think this is the only chance I have to find out who the father is. Extreme long shot tho it is.
Unfortunately, I can't get to the record office as I'm in Oz.

Hello Dave,
Sorry, I am too far away from Chester to go myself.
I think that, in some cases, there can be records in the Quarter Sessions papers regarding illegitimate children.
Have you looked for his marriage? The marriage certificate might show his father's name. It is possible that the entry in the Parish Registers would include this if you know where and when he married.
I say this as my gt gt grandfather was illegitimate and his marriage certificate had his father's name on it.
The Johnson family were quite extensive in that area of Cheshire in those days. I have some in my tree.
Jo.
