Thank you Mike for your prompt reply, you have hit the nail on the head with my John Law of Melton Mowbray. I have just received an email from Canada to say Christopher Staveley died 1801 and is buried at St. Wulfram, Grantham, Lincolnshire, I will have to try and check this out.
Christopher was an Architect, Engineer & Sculpter working on churches throughout the area.
Thank you once again

Hi I'm just doing a survey of the Melton Mowbray church yard.Burials ceased there in 1899. So Melton cemetry might have some information from then
There is one large tomb to Christopher Staveley and his wife Sarah. I would guess there are other members of the family there too.
Not east to read but early 1800.

Hi just found a site on the internet all about Staveley families. I just googled Christopher Staveley.
Now in reference to the tomb in Melton Mowbray
I'm sure I can read Dunsmore and Draper on it as well.
This Christopher married to Sarah Hill was born 1726 I think
Their daughter Ann Married William Dunsmore ,Daughter Sarah married John Draper , Bridgett married William Adcock ,Christopher married Lucy ? then Ruth?(Loughborough connection) there was a Mary and an Edward who designed Nottingham Park and also an Elizabeth who married John Hickson.
In the churchyard there is a Bridget+ William Adcock and also a pinnacle to the Hickson family which mentions Elizabeth as a daughter of Christopher Staveley.
Hope this helps

Thank you so much Birchwood for setting my mind at rest on clarifying for me the place of rest of Christopher Staveley b. 1726, my 4th Gt Grandfather, also my 3rd Gt Grandfather William Adcock & Elizabeth Staveley. I live near Southport Lancashire, this year I hope to have a holiday at Melton Mowbray and to take some photos of their tombstones, also the Hickson Pinnacle, I have all these names you gave me on my family tree. John Hickson was a Banker at Melton Mowbray, his son Thomas built Staveley House at Nottingham Road.
Once again thank you for your kindness.

Hello Birchwood,
I was very interested to read you are doing a survey of the Melton Mowbray Churchyard, Is there any where to be able to view the work you have done online? I am interested in the names of Barratt (& other spelling variations), Short & Winter/Winters who were buried there & I would love to know if they have headstones. I am unable to visit Melton myself. Any help you could offer me would be very much appreciated. Thank you
:)

sorry it isn't on line at the moment as its not quite finished. None of the names you mention ring bells as far as the church yard is concerned but I will check the Kings Street Cemetery as well and be back in touch if I find anything.Sadly a lot of the stones have been moved in the past or are unreadable. If I find anything I'll let you know.
-
Thank you birchwood that's very kind of you, I didn't realise there was a King Street cemetery, the only other one I knew about was on Thorpe Road.
:)
-
The Kings Street cemetery was opened in 1846 as an extension to the churchyard when the churchyard was filling up .It also closed in 1899.After that all burials were in Thorpe Road. There are stones there still but they all were moved to sides when the St Marys Way road was put through. I do have an almost complete list of the burials there.

Hi found in Kings Street list
Rose Winters Nov 22nd 1892
Matthew Winters Nov 13th 1882 grave 41
but it won't be in position if there is a stone as they were all moved
no Barretts or Shorts as fdar as I can see but they are local names
could be at Sysonby church or Welby church or Thorpe Arnold or Burton Lazars or Asfordby all close by, or methodist or URC burials maybe
hope this helps

Thank you birchwood for the information and the burial details of Rose and Matthew. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Birchwood, thank you for your past help, I have just had a couple of days in Melton Mowbray and visited St. Mary church, found my 4th Gt grandfathers Tomb Christopher Staveley, the Hickson Pinnacle and several Adcock family Headstones, could you please tell me if the following people were reinterred at the King Street Cemetery:
William Adcock 1706-1786 and wife Mary
William Adcock 1750-1812and wife Bridget
Anna Maria Law 1812-1816 daughter of John and Vertue Law.
John Law died 1828 and wife Vertue.
Are their any other Law family interred at King Street.
I know this is a tall order but would greatly appreciate your help.

Hi
Sorry but I have not got any LAW family noted in my list. It is sad but lots of the stones were moved to other positions and some were used for other purposes in the two movings that we know about. There are some I have been unable to read yet.
All burials would have been in St Marys up to 1846 when King Street cemetery was opened but there would not have been any movement of remains at all. After 1846 up to 1899 the burial would have been either in St Mary's or King Street.
Its good to know that you have been to see the stones that are there. Did you also manage to see Staveley Lodge ?
-
Hi Birchwod,
Am I correct in assuming that all burial remains prior to 1846 at St. Mary are still in the church grounds? On my short visit it was terrible weather so did not manage to see Staveley Lodge, I have a picture of it, my other research was trying to find any info on my Gt Gt grandfather John Law who was a solicitor, Clerk to The Magistrates and Surveyor of Taxes in Melton, I went to the Library and Museum, they were so very helpful, but no info, I was trying to trace his origins, the England Law Society does not record his name, I contacted the Scottish Law Society, all their records prior to 1880 were destroyed in a fire, my mother said we had Scottish ancestry, I have done all branches of my family tree, none are Scottish so he appears to be Scottish, you may be interested to know, my Gt Gt uncle was Edward Adcock who in 1831 was reputed to be an originator of the name Melton Mowbray pork pie. I have family connections with Egerton Lodge, Melton Lodge, North Lodge, Sysonby Lodge, Wycliffe House, the Adcock family were Brewers in Melton and Wissendine.
Thank you for your kindness John
