I cannot find the death of my Gx2 Grandmother, Ann Tobin - there are details of two unwanted d/cs in the unwanted section
Ann was married to Dennis and they had at least 5 children
• Christopher b 1885
• Michael b 1887
• Catherine b 1888 d 1915 aged 27
• Ann b 1892 d 1907 aged 15
• John Patrick b 1893
Dennis died in 1913 - Ann may have died as late as the 1940s
Any connections or help would be appreciated

My first thought is:
Did Ann remarry? If so, she may have a different surname.
As an aside, if you find the family on the 1911 census, you will learn how many children they had.

hi
I don't think Ann did remarry as she was referred to in the family as Grandma Tobin - and I can't find a record of another marriage
On the 1911 census, Dennis, Ann, Christopher, Michael, Catherine and John Patrick are all living in Trimdon - Ann was 55 by then so I imagine that was the whole family
I have tried other spellings of both names but to no avail

Um, well in that case have you considered that she may not have died in Durham? :-\
Who were the informants on the 2 wrong d/c's? (ie. were they close relatives of Ann?)
Are the occupations for the John Tobin and Thomas Tobin incorrect too?
What leads you to believe that Ann may have died as late as the 1940?
-
Given that you cannot find the death of a suitable Ann TOBIN I would not reject the idea that she married again just because the family continued to call he Nanna TOBIN. They would still have kept to that name I think.
There are possible marriages to a PINDER and to a HAUXSWELL on FreeBMD.

What you say about her continuing to be called Grandma Tobin might be feasible, but one of those marriages took place in 1908 and Dennis was still alive then. With the other one, Ann would have been 76 so though not impossible, fairly unlikely ....
A remarriage in her maiden name perhaps? :-\

What dates were the two wrong death certificates? I only found one possible Ann Tobin death on Free BMD. Ann Tobin age 82, JUN 1941, Durham NW. If you knew which household/area she was living in after votes for all women and prior to her death she could be traced on the Electoral Registers.
-
hi Barry, Bryan and Ruskie
ooh - that is a good idea - I am still quite new at this so would not have thought of electoral registers - because I knew my greatgrandparents I havn't had to do much research between 1911 and the present date
the first incorrect d/c was 1903 - my very first certificate I ordered for my new hobby and it was wrong!
thanks all with your help on this - I will def not be remarrying at 76, so if Ann did do this, the tradition can die with her!
-
What was it about the death certificate in 1941 which makes you reject it. The age of 82 is not quite right but it is not unusual for the informant to get the age wrong or there could be a transcription error - maybe it should have said 85 rather than 82.
Did you get the certificate from the GRO or the local Registrar?

hi Bryan
I got it from GRO
husband's name was given as Thomas not Dennis
son-in-law was informant - her only son-in-law was my G Grandad Thomas Tyer
address was Consett but she lived in Trimdon

Hi Stephanie,
Have you seen this website - www.trimdontimes.co.uk - there is also a forum on there besides lots of other useful info about Trimdon. It helped me when I was searching for my Durham lot!!
Just thought I'd mention it :)
Elaine.

Son-in-Law's are not going to be the most accurate informants on a death certificate. Consett was in Durham NW.
-
Barry is right. If Dennis died way back in 1913 the son in law may have got her husband's name wrong.
Of course you say that Thomas Tyer was your Ann's only son in law, which is the reason you believe this certificate is incorrect.
But still it may be worth keeping in mind that sometimes informants give incorrect details.
