I am looking to get further back on this side of the family Conrad / Leonard Clifford b 1822 born in Germany, father was Conrad Clifford too.
Conrad / Leonard Clifford married Ellen Fitzgerald b 1828 Ireland father was Edward Fitzgerald. I have no further information except that their children were
Caroline 1848
Edward 1851
James 1853
William 1856
Lizzy 1858
any help would be appreciated

COnrad married Ellen on August 9 1847 at St MAry Whitechapel. Conrad was of full age, a bachelor, living at Plough St. His occupation appears to be a skin dresser?! Father is Conrad Clifford, shoemaker.
Ellen is also of full age, spinster and living at Plough St. Father Edward is a mariner.
Witnesses were peter Werner and Eliza Clifford.

By 1861, Conrad has changed his name to James!

I know, well I think it changed to James...the birth year is wrong, he is also down as Leonard, but I think that is just how it is written with a fancy C. Either that or she has remarried but I have not broke the next stage.
Thank you for Eliza Clifford though, maybe that's the way to go.

It might be worth you asking for help from the Germany bit of the board - to me, Clifford doesn't sound hugely German, so they may have anglicised it when they emigrated.
There is another German Clifford family that I noticed on the census, might be worth keeping a note of them (if you haven't already) because it might match up somewhere. This Clifford family consists of Elizabeth Clifford and her daughter Jo(h)anna who married James Peryer in 1846 (All Saints, Edmonton). Joanna gives her father's name as Jacob Clifford, a shoemaker.......
(1851 HO107; Piece: 1578; Folio: 260; Page:7 name is Peyer
1861 RG9; Piece: 372; Folio: 55; Page: 2 name is Parbery
1871 RG10; Piece: 710; Folio: 45; Page: 6 name is Perrier, but gives POB as Niederwiesel, Germany)

I think Clifford may be Irish too and somehow Conrad was born in Germany.
I think I came across Caroline of Edward's children (Conrad's and Ellen's son) being born in Ireland and all the rest are born in Devon. So maybe it was just being away from home at the time. It is the same in my family one of us was born in Ireland and the rest born in Cornwall. It was so easy with the other side of the family they have stayed in the same town for 200 years.

I wonder if Elizabeth Clifford is the same person as Eliza Clifford?

I wondered that too, but at the moment I can't see any connection between the families except their surname and place of birth!

Thank you for your help and advice

I found an Eliza Clifford staying as lodger with a Frances Denter and family in 1851, with other Cliffords born in Germany. I think the transcription maybe wrong as I cannot make head or tail of the other names. an anyone help?
