Title: Gaw/Patterson/Kyles/Lusk/Fleck
Post by: Finiston on Friday 18 February 11 02:54 GMT (UK)
Catherine Gaw, my G.Grandmother, married Thomas Skinner, a private in the Queens 16th Lancers, in Belfast in January, 1884. I've been able to trace Thomas right back to 1700 or so, but I can find nothing about Catherine except that her father was called Adam Gaw.

Joseph Patterson and Emily Kyles married in Belfast in October 1876. I think Joseph's father was also Joseph, but I can find no trace of Emily except for a record in the 1911 census where she is identified as a 54 year-old widow. I can't find any record of Joseph.

Arthur Lusk and Ellen Fleck (or Flack) were married in June 1865 in Islandmagee 2nd Presbyterian Church. Arthur may have been a seaman and his father was Arthur as well. I've heard through the family that the younger Arthur died at about age 65 with a stroke.  Ellen's father was Robert Fleck, of Islandmagee.

I would really appreciate any suggestions or help in tracing any or all of these elusive relatives. I called at PRONI two years ago when I was visiting Belfast from Canada but had no luck.

                                                 Many thanks.....  Brian

Hi,
Emily Kyles' father was William Kyles. Also may be in 1901 census in Lebanon St, Clifton, Co. Antrim, a 44 year old widow with some of her children.
I can also find a marriage of Adam Gaw and Eliza Reid in Lisburn 1st Presbyterian Church on 10 Oct 1872 but I cannot prove he is yours.

Regards

Correction. Adam Gaw's marriage date should read 1852

Finiston,  Certainly Arthur Lusk , father Arthur's marriage record is listed on:

http://www.ancestryireland.com/index.php?ai_home

This will give his occupation and that of his father and quite a bit more information.

I think you will find Joseph Patterson's marriage there as well and you can check it by cross referencing his and the bride's names.

On the same site, if you go to the marriage section and just put the surname Gaw in the box and then the name Adam in the father's name, you will find a number of names, some of them may be Catherine's siblings.
Well worth the £4 you pay for each record.  It will help you get a bit farther back.  Let us know if we can help any further.  RosemaryJoan

Children of Arthur Lusk and Ellen Fleck are listed in LDS database. Would be worth checking for all those names if you haven't done so already.

I have proved that Adam Gaw of that marriage to Eliza Reid is yours.  Adam was an engine driver who lived in 51 Hillview Street, Belfast when Catherine (Kate) married.  I have her brother James,s birth here father Adam Gaw, mother Eliza Reid, at 52 Hillview Street but can't find Catherine (Kate)'s birth as it was before Civil Registration.  I will send you the details by PM.  RosemaryJoan

Hi,
As well as the brother, James born 1876, there were two sisters, Sarah Jane Gaw, one in 1872 who I assume died young and the second in 1873.

Thank you all so much. Kingkerswell, that is my g.grandmother on Lebanon Street in the 1901 census and the Gaw/Reid marriage, in 1852, is that of my g.grandparents.

RosemaryJoan, although we've communicated privately, thanks again for all your help.

And aghadowey, you very kindly directed me to that same link when I asked for help several months ago and it was very helpful, so thanks again.

I think you're all wonderful!                                           Brian

Hello Brian,
I am very interested in any research you may have compiled about Catherine Gaw/Skinner.  My Great-Grand Mother Essie Billinghurst was the granddaughter of Catherine Gaw Skinner and Thomas Skinner.  If I am correct, the marriage of Catherine Gaw and Thomas Skinner produced another daughter named Catherine Gaw Skinner who married a gentleman named Alfred Thomas Billinghurst (a copy of their marriage certificate can be found on ancestory.com for a price).  The marriage produced a number of daughters who settled in Clifton, Co Antrim including my Great Grand mother Essie. (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Clifton/Southport_Street/147090/).  My Great Grandmother Essie Billinghurst married a man named William Thomas Fulton who was the caretaker of the students union at Queens University-Belfast for many years.  They passed away in the 50's and 60's respectively.  A picture of their grave can be found on billiongraves.com (http://billiongraves.com/pages/record/William-Thomas-Fulton/5082375).  I am very grateful if you could share any information you possibly have and am very excited to learn from you have presented on this site.  I am interested if you have any information on the Billinghurst or Fulton families as well. I live in the United States currently and my father is from Northern Ireland so first-hand research is of course a geographic obstacle for me.  Thank you so much for your time.

I thinks there might be a bit of confusion here.

The gravestone clearly shows William Fulton's wife as Maud and the Will Extract lists her as Matilda (Matilda and Maud are both forms of the same name and can be used interchangeably)-
Fulton William Thomas of 40 Knockbreda Road Belfast retired superintendent students' union died 12 October 1955 Probate Belfast 5 January to Matilda Fulton the widow. Effects £3558 7s. 11d.
GRONI's death index gives their ages-
William Fulton, age 63, died 12 Oct.1955 Belfast district
Matilda Fulton, age 68, died 27 Nov.1960 Newtownards district

Their marriage record confirms that this is the same couple- 7 Jan.1914 Belfast district, William Thomas Fulton & Matilda Bellinghurst

Here's Matilda Billinghurst in the 1911 census with her father Alfred Thomas Bellinghurst, a widower, and siblings (note there is a younger sister Essie A.)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Clifton/Southport_Street/147090

Same household in 1901 census with Matilda's mother Essie A. alive-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Clifton/Rosewood/963034

Matilda's father Alfred Thomas Billinghurst married 27 Sept.1917 Belfast district to a widow, Catherine Skinner. She was the widow of Thomas Skinner and is buried with her first husband.

Sooneratsaxpn1:   Aghadowey is right, there is a bit of confusion here.  Catherine Gaw Skinner, my G.Grandmother, married Alfred Thomas Billinghurst on 29th September, 1917. Catherine was a widow, my G.Grandfather, Thomas Skinner, having died in 1904, and Alfred was a widower. They didn't have any children. Catherine and Thomas had a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, who was always referred to as Essie, but never as Essie Billinghurst as far as I know.  So as far as I can see, your Essie Billinghurst is not a descendant of the Gaws of County Down.
I've sent you a PM containing my email address so if you'd like any further details you can communicate directly.
Let me add here that I'm located in Canada and thanks to the great people on this forum, I've been able to learn a lot about my Northern Irish ancestors.

I did find lots more about the Gaws, Skinners, Billingshursts, etc. as there are lots of new online resources since this this topic started. Finiston- would you like the details I found?

Aghadowey, thanks very much for that kind offer.  I've also found quite a bit, including a lovely and tragic story of John Gaw, Catherine's grandfather, who lost a leg at the Battle of Talavera when he was only 22 years old. He was awarded a pension of one shilling a week!
I don't think I'd be interested in the Billinghurst information but anything you might have on the direct lines would be most welcome.
Thanks again...........Brian

Some, or most of this, you might already have found but just in case... (this is not in any way a complete family tree). Note: 'Belfast' refers to the registration district as given in GRONI index.

Thanks aghadowey, you are invaluable!  I have found most of this, but I wasn't aware of James, born in 1893, so I'll get to work on that. The first Sydney (1895 - 1897) is also new to me.
The other family tree to which you referred is that of a second cousin who also lives in Ontario. He has very kindly put me on track for finding lots of information but he won't accept that Adam Gaw and Eliza Reid are Catherine's parents. As you say, there are a few other errors as well.

Hello aghadowey.  Thank you so much for the information.  Especially for the information on my Great Grandfather William Thomas Fulton.  I have tried very hard to find information on him and his family.  Unfortunately living in the United States and the fact that so many people in Ulster are named William Fulton only makes matters more difficult.  The fact that you have an age during the time of his death certainly gives me a lot of room to do research.  I am very sorry for the confusion when I mentioned the name Essie as my Great-Grandmother.  Yes, Maud Billinghurst is my Great-Grandmother.  When I mentioned the name Essie, I was actually thinking of my Grandmother Essie Astrid Billinghurst.  Thank you for clarifying the confusion.  You did mention that you had information on the Billinghurst family.  I would be very grateful for an information you may have on that family and so would my father.  His grandparents (William Fulton and Maud Billinghurst) passed away when he was still young and most of the information that he obtained was second hand.  My father was very close to his great aunt Agnes Billinghurst who married a man named Joe Martin (sic) and I believe they resided in Belfast.  I would be very happy for information on the Billinghurst family that you have.  Coincidently, would you know of any good sources online for war records?  From my understanding, my Great Grandfather William Fulton was a veteran of the Somme Battle in the First World War.  I was told by many that he had no use of his left arm which was a result of a rifle or bayonet wound which also resulted in his death later in life.  Again, I am not certain if this information is true or information that was fabricated by my Grandmother Essie Astrid Billinghurst.  Regardless, I would be very grateful if you could recommend a good source.  I have tried forces-war-records.co.uk and ancestory.co.uk but no luck.  I certainly do appreciate you time and am most grateful.

Firstly, it may be that the records of William Fulton no longer exist- only about 1 third of WWI  records do.

Living in America shouldn't make it more difficult for you to find the same information I've found sitting at my computer at home. It's merely a matter of knowing which local resources to investigate. So, here's some Billinghurst notes.

Alfred Thomas Billinghurst (c1863 England-4 Feb.1952) m.1 (7 Dec.1883 Belfast) Essie Annie Dalton (c1865 Belfast-7 Dec.1910 Belfast); m.2 (27 Sept.1917 Belfast) Catherine (Gaw) Skinner (d.30 Oct.1943).

Hello aghadowey,
Thank you so very much for the information that you have provided for the Billinghurst family.  You are correct about having to know which sources to seek out to gain family information because I can assure you that it has not been for a lack of effort.  I have tried sources from the National Archives to the Imperial War Museum for records but have usually hit a dead end.  Even trying to search for information on the online Belfast Telegraph archives and other sources have hit a dead end despite the fact that I know the information is there.  Regardless, I am very grateful for your time and information.

I may have found William Thomas Fulton's family- what is his father's occupation on the 1914 marriage certificate? and what's listed as William Thomas Fulton, address? also names of both witnesses please?

I am afraid that we really honestly don't know the occupation of the father of William Thomas Fulton.  I know the last address of where they resided at the time of his death: 40 Knockbreda Road Belfast and the date of the marriage is Jan 7, 1914.  Other then that my father didn't even know any details of his grandfather since he died when my father was only seven.  My father believed that the family of William Thomas Fulton mostly came from County Tyrone or Country Antrim but was uncertain.  I do know that William Thomas Fulton was the Union Steward of Queens University Belfast for many years but have little information other then that.  I am very grateful if you do have any information.  Thanks again.  The information that Finiston and yourself have provided has provided much information and can't wait to share it with the rest of the family.

Hi,
William Thomas Fulton married Matilda Billinghurst in St. Marks Ballysillan Church of Ireland, Shankill, Belfast on 7 Jan 1914. The fathers' names were William Thomas Fulton and Alfred Thomas Billinghurst.

Regards

Any chance that you've heard of any Fulton connections (aunts, uncles, cousins)? any mention of New Zealand?

I honestly don't know if there are any connections in New Zealand but very possible.  I know there are some connections on my fathers' paternal family in Australia.  I really don't know about New Zealand.

Not to be off topic but I am afraid that I am somewhat ignorant about the ability to search for information on the GRONI website or the Belfast Telegraph archives and was asking for advice.  I know some have gathered information from those sources but when I search for the same information I am unable to locate any information or even a mention of a certain sir name.  Does anyone possibly know what I am doing wrong?  Thank you for your time.

GRONI's site is quite easy to use but sometimes, as with other sites, less is better. You can use the 'begins with' option to search for the start of a surname which often finds mistranscriptions and don't select the district in case someone was born, married or died in a place you weren't suspecting.

Hi Finiston,

You probably are aware of the following already, but just in case you don't, there is a gravestone at C.O.I. Islandmagee for Fleck. It reads;

Erected by Margaret Fleck in memory of her husband ROBERT FLECK who died at sea 1884 aged 55 years. Also her mother Elizabeth McATAMNEY who died 1863 aged43 years. And her father John McATAMNEY who died 1888 aged 77 years. The above Margaret Fleck died 7th Oct. 1908.

This may not be your family but is certainly worth a look.

Good hunting.

J.A.M.

Hi J.A.M.   Thanks for passing that on. I found a number of Flack/Fleck graves when I was in Islandmagee a few years ago but I can't tie any of them to my family. My Robert Fleck would have been born around 1820 to 1825 but I can't find a record of his birth, marriage or death. His daughter Ellen, my great grandmother, was born in 1844 so for the one you mention to be him would mean that he was 14 or 15 years old at that time. Not impossible I guess but not too likely.

Thanks again........Brian

The following new topic about Catherine Gaw seems to relate to this one:
