Hello, looking for the birth of Harriet Greatrex born about 1830- 1836 Armitage Stafford (dont know parents names) Thank you for any help
-
Do you have Harriet on any census?
Who did she marry?
Suz
-
Thank you suz for reply, she married George Williams from Stafford, have her on 1861 census of Stafford that is where I got her Birthplace from and her maiden name Greatrex came from her youngest daughters Birth certificate, I cannot find Harriets birth cert or her marriage cert
-
In the 1861 census their 3-yr-old daughter Ann is shown with birthplace "America". Have you considered that they may have married there?
1861: RG9/1906/43/5.

I cannot find Harriets birth cert or her marriage cert
There won't be a birth certificate if she was born before civil registration, as it appears from the 1861 census in which she was 35. Civil registration only came in with effect from 1 July 1837. Before that one would be looking for a baptismal record at best.

By 1871 George has remarried (to Dorothy Ann MOUNTFORD, Dec 1870 Stafford 6b 25).
Daughter Ann is enumerated as Ann C. WILLIAMS, 13, born "Livingstone, America".
1871 ref: RG10/2816/6/5.

Try searching for Greatorex which is the surname I have come across a hell of a lot in SOuth Derbyshire Staffordshire

Thank you avm228 and Rob I have thought of America as marriage place but I would not know where to start looking, as she gave her birth place as Armitage( I take it that is in Staffordshire) what churches would have been there in the 1830s when she was born

Genuki is always the place to start to locate church records locations and churches see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Armitage/index.html#ChurchRecords

Hello, looking for the birth of Harriet Greatrex born about 1830- 1836 Armitage Stafford
Given that she was aged 35 in the 1861 census, and the most likely death registration has her as aged 40 (Harriet WILLIAMS, Sep qtr 1870 Stafford 6b 6) I'd have thought her birthdate was more likely to be in the range 1825-1830. What is your range of birthdates based upon?
NB In 1851 there is a 22 yr old unmarried Maria GREATREX in service in Rugeley, Staffs giving a birthplace of Armitage: HO107/2015/311/4. She may well be related to Harriet in some way.
-
Thank you avm228, I was going on her being 40 at time od death making a birth date of 1830 give or take a few years her husband Gearge Williams was born 1834, would that be her with the name wrong in 1851? is she to be found in Armitage in 1841
-
Sorry, I owe you an apology - Harriet was enumerated as only 26 in 1861! I don't know where on earth I got 35 from... :-[
-
No worries she is still to early for reg

THere is a marriage for a William Greatrix to a Mary Birchall in Armitage on 25th July 1831 (IGI new search) who could possibly be her parents, but so far can see no sign of a baptism for Harriet.
Handm

Thank you Handm, would they be on the 1841 census maybe Harriet would be picked up there
-
I am afraid they are not immediately appearing in Armitage.
Handm
-
Thank you handm, I am just wondering if they were originally from derbyshire as it seems there are lots of Greatrex there, maybe Armitage was just a place they moved to in later years ? dont know where else to look
-
Hi Mallow
I have been following your thread with interest as I visit the churchyard at Armitage for OH parents grave. I don't know about you but I always look at names on gravestones as I'm wondering round ::) and have noticed some that may be of interest to you although I cannot remember for sure if they are Greatrix or Greatorex. Hopefully, weather and everything else permitting, we will be there on Friday so I will have a look for you if you like? It may solve your brick wall or may create another ;D

Thank you so much crystal for your kind offer, I would be grateful for a look up of gravestones whatever you can find, I am getting desperate ;D
-
There is also a Methodist Chapel in Armitage, your Harriet may have been baptised there, would need to check when the Chapel was built. HTH Linell.
-
Hello,
Thanks for jogging my memory Linell. There was also a small Congregational chapel (later known as URC) on the main road through Armitage, but I do not know its dates or what became of its registers. Stafford RO might have information on that.
Handm

Oh thanks for that Handm, we tend to forget about all the little old Chapels.
Linell.

Hi Mallow
Sorry for the delay in replying, yesterday was OH's birthday so we were out most of the day and the house is now in uproar as Blues have won the cup - OH and family are true blue fans so I'm grabbing a few moments of peace and quiet ;D
Well, I don't think I have solved your query in fact I may have raised some more ::) It was abit wet and windy so only did a quick search but found the following for you:
In loving memory of
Federick Greatrix
Who died March 21 1959
aged 64 yrs
...................................................
In loving memory of
Sarah
the beloved wife of
Robert Greatrix
late of Bromley Lane, Handsacre
who died at Warwick
on 18 December 1901
after a lingering illness
in her 50th year
Also, of the above
Robert Greatrix
who passed away
May 27 1930
in his 79th year
Peace Perfect Peace
................................................
Humm - they are not as early as we wanted but they do show a Greatrix presence in the village and Handsacre and Armitage boundry each other. You could try tracing these back and seeing if they link up with your Hannah?
Sorry I've not been able to add anything positive to the thread. I will be visiting Lichfield RO in a few weeks if you would like anything checking there. Do you have any other info on this family? Hopefully the weather will be better next time we go to the churchyard and I will be able to have a better look, the churchyard is rather unsteady in places and OH would not let me go slithering around parts of it as it was a bit wet and muddy. Fingers crossed.
Crystal
PS I will also try and check the Methodist Chapel graves.
-
Thank you so much Crystal for help, wandering around a wet and windy graveyard on OH birthday does not sound like much fun ,I will have a look at names you got anyway and see if I can find out anything. When you go to Lichfield maybe you would be able to check the register there for me please ,her birth was between 1830=1836 and her marriage to George Williams between 1855-1860 Harriet Greatrex was my GG Grandmother on my Mothers side of the family but I have no information about her other than that piece on the 1861 census and her death that means I cannot go back any further without a birth entry. :)
-
Mallow there are no births before 1837, only baptism's. There are a few Churches around Armitage, ones in Lichfield and Rugeley, hopefully something will turn up. Linell.
-
Hi Mallow
I was at the Records Office in Lichfield this morning and had a look for your Harriet's baptism - I checked the baptisms at Armitage (which includes Handsacre) for the years between 1820 and 1844. No sign of Harriet I'm afraid :( but did find these which may come in useful or might add to the confusion ::)
22 March 1834, Charles, son of William & Mary Greatrix, Handsacre, Pipe Maker.
20 May 1835, John, son of Edward & Hannah Greatrix, Armitage, Labourer.
25 April 1841, Hannah, daughter of James & Mary Greatorex (the last bit was a bit smudged),
Armitage, Labourer, born 20th March.
25 April 1841, Caroline, daughter of James & Mary Greatorex (again abit smudged), Armitage, Labourer, born Feb 17th.
18 Feb 1843, Charles, son of James & Maria Greatorix, Armitage, labourer, born 3 May 1843.
I've just realised something - the daughters of James & Mary baptised 1841 - I must have missed the year of birth for one of them otherwise the mother would have been giving birth in Feb & March - sorry, will recheck that for you :-[
Not a lot of help I'm afraid, we may have to widen the search area? I'm hoping to get back to Armitage soon and have a look round the chapel church yard. I have looked there for some of hubbies and know that there are not a lot of headstones. I would be interested if you find out where the records are for the chapel as it may solve some of hubbies missing rellies.
Let me know if you need anything else checking or verifying.
Crystal.

Hi Mallow, I've lost track now of what Census information you have, I found this family in 1841 Derbyshire?
Litchurch Street Litchurch
Millicent Greatorex 41 Laundress (all ticked Yes born in County)
Caroline 18 Silk Factory
Eliza 15
Mary 13
Sarah 11
Harriet 3
Hope this helps from Linell.

Thank you so much for that search Crystal, I am not sure if any of them are mine, as I dont know who her brothers or sisters were (if she had any) as you said might have to widen my search, Staffordshire record office hold records for the old Anglican church in Armitage( Bapt 1662-1967) Marr 1662-1989 (Burrial 1662- 1992) thats a lot of records, but as I live in ireland I cannot search myself, is it too far away for you? Harriet may have married in Stafford instead of Armitage as her husband was from Stafford cant think where else to look I dont think Derbyshire is in the running as there was no mention of it :)
