Title: SS Great Britain Passenger Lists
Post by: romak on Thursday 17 February 11 10:35 GMT (UK)
Hi
I believe a Annie Caffery came to Australia in about 1869 on the SS Great Britain.  Would someone be able to look it up for me please and let me know if that is correct and if there is any other info on her?
Thanks
Robyn

The Great Britain seems to have arrived a couple times in Melbourne in 1869 - I'm not seeing her on either the assisted or unassisted immigration indexes at: http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide023/PROVguide023.jsp on any ship, though.

Do you have a bit more info about Annie? e.g. how old would she have been, are there any other names she might have been using, who might she have been travelling with, where in Australia she settled, etc.

Jorose, it looks like Annie married James KENNEY in 1872 in Perth, WA, and died there in 1889 aged 37.

Hi romak,

Do you have her death certificate?  Though not always completely accurate, it should give info on the time she lived in each state and at least give you an idea of whether she might have arrived directly into WA.

Did you know that there is a good chance that she had a sister Elizabeth with her?

Thanks for replying.
Annie Teresa Caffery was born about 1852 and no I haven't got her death cert yet as I can see on the WA website that it doesn't include her parents names or where she was born.   Her parents were Patrick and Catherine and I think he was a grocer.

Hi Robyn. I am replying to a PM email from you....for some reason I can't reply so am doing it this way. I don't think your Patrick is related to my branch of the family. At least not that I am aware of. My Patrick was married to Bridget and lived in Cavan. My direct link is James Edward Caffrey, who came to America about 1830, first in Philadelphia and then in San Francisco. Wish I could help.

I have a book with the names and details of all the passengers on the SS Great Britain between 1852-1875.

There is only one entry with the surname you're researching and that is:

John Caffery, age 21, Irish, Labourer.

He sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne, leaving on 15th Dec 1867. The journey took 57 days and there were 512 passengers on board.

Probably of no help to you but then again, it is the same surname and may be. :)

Elizabeth CAFFREY married Edmund William READ at Perth in 1874.  They had three children, Florence Ada in 1875 (infant death), Bertha Naomi in 1878, married Charles SHEPHERD and died 1966, and Annie Agnes born c1881 (where?), married James DOHERTY and died 1943.

Edmund READ remarried to Mary Ellen GUERIN in Victoria in 1888, so I wonder if this is Elizabeth's death:

1886
Port Melbourne, Victoria
Elizabeth  Ann READ
Aged   37
Father: Pat CAFFRAY
#14016

Edmund and Mary Ellen had two sons in Victoria and then returned to WA. When Edmund died in 1937, his obit mentions a nephew J. KENNY.

Mary Ellen's death notice:

The READ/CAFFREY marriage cert might confirm a relationship between Annie and Elizabeth, and if they are sisters then Elizabeth's death cert might provide more info.

I've downloaded Elizabeth Read's death cert.  It says her second name is Ann and that she was born in Dublin with her parents as Patrick, a contractor, and mother illegible first name and 'not known' surname.  I'm not totally sure that she is Annie's sister and may get her marriage cert to check.
Would you be able to tell me where the references like #Acc115/110 that Merlin mentioned came from?
Thanks
Robyn

I see that Hampshire lass has information about passenger lists for the S S Great Britain, and wondered if a look up could be done for a Domenica Righetti who arrived in Melbourne 2nd May 1861. She was from Switzerland, but was probably living in England prior to her voyage. Any info would be good although I guess it would be difficult finding any ancestors for her.
regards.

The person listed on the Great Britain manifest in 1861 is recorded as Domenico RIGGATTI, a male farmer aged 21.

Your Domenica's marriage certificate should give her age and birthplace and name both her parents.

Extracted from Metropolitan Cemeteries Board of WA website:
A James KENNY (sic) died 23 January 1936, age 90 years, at Fremantle and was buried in Fremantle Cemetery, RC Area, Mon CC, Gravesite 0555. OF SPECIAL INTEREST is the Grantee (purchaser of plot?) was noted as a James KENNEY (sic). The deceased may be your James KENNEY as his age at death places his DOB circa 1846 which would make him about 26 years old at 1872.

No my great grandfather died in 1902 and my grandfather in 1948 (I think).  There's quite a few families of Kenny's but we're not related to any that we know of.

From the Public Record Office of Victoria the transcribed passenger list for Great Britain July 1874 lists Mr John Campbell A (Adult) and John Campbell 11. The original lists are very degraded and it was hard to decipher amongst the 601 passengers.
So not much help I'm afraid.
