This James Travis died 7 April 1885 from injuries caused by falling off a railway bridge at Parkbridge near Ashton-under-Lyne Lancashire he was married to Matilda nee Swindalls. He was 39 years old which makes him born 1845 or 46,parents Samuel and Betty neeTetlow. I have been unable to obtain his birth certificate after many years of trying all options can anyone help??

Seems strange that nearly all James Travises come from Lancashire and I'm afraid such a list doesn't make it any easier to find the right one but hope this is of some help.

I note that Samuel Travis and Betty Tetlow didn't marry until Dec.qtr 1845 Ashton under lyne.
As has just been shown, a James Travis birth reg'd the same quarter - dec.1845 Ashton under lyne. This could well be him.

It was not compulsory to register the birth at that time so may be it is not there to find? Did he have siblings whose births were registered? Where does he give as place of birth on the census records. You know his parents so getting that certificate is not an essential fortunately. However, looking at the 1851 census, the James who is a son of Samuel Travis and Betty Tetlow is actually born in 1836 not 46 so there may be an error here somewhere. Census ref. HO107 2238 460 2

Thanks Keith for your list of James's over the years I have checked them all but have not come up with the correct parents, I am beginning to think he may not have been registered.Hoping one day someone else may come across him for me.

Hi Annette thanks for your comment, this was the first certificate I sent for guess what it is the wrong parents as all the other ones checked, beginning to lose hope of ever finding his birth I have his death certficate coronors report and even know where he is buried, maybe one day!

Have you tried christening records?
WE discovered a similar problem within my own family, where five out of seven children were registered but the other two don't appear to be, despite showing up on census records. Fortunately they were all christened at the same church, so we were able to confirm their births.
I was told by a registrar that in those days it was the responsibility of the local registrar to seek out births and register them. Apparently they were paid a commission for each entry they made and more than on registrar ended up in gaol for creating false entries to increase their earnings.

I notice that you didn't respond to Sillgen's post.
Is the family that she identified in the 1851 census the correct one? It points to the birth being 10 yrs earlier than you are looking.
Does the death certificate give his age as 49 or 39 as shown in the index?

Hello Andrea, James had a sister Ann born 1847 her certificate was the correct parents and living at Lockingates, as for the 1851 census James is 15 on the 1861 he is 15 1871, 24 1881, and 35 in 1881. I have not been able to sort that one out just put it down to an error that year as he was 39 years old at death.

Found his sister from St Michaels church records as she was christened there, unfortunatly the James 1 year previously with parents listed as Samuel and Betty Travis (the correct names), according to the Registrars office did not have the correct parents.I really thought I had found him that time

Hello David The delay was down to checking my details before replying will try to be quicker in replying as I get used to the system. Yes it is the correct family they did not move for many years James death was reported in the local paper as it was an unfortunate accident, and his death cetificate states he was 39 years old.

Sorry for the confusion, yes I do have James and Matildas marraige certificate 24 June 1872 and yes his father is listed as Samuel deceased.
