my grandmother's family were blacksmiths in sussex during the whole of the 19th century and up to the 1960s in Faygate, where the smithy still stands. There were
several John Mitchell's.My great grandfather was James Mitchell who died in, I think 1938 at Horsham. The family has tales of horse shoeing competitions over many years.

I have just found your post and I realise that it is two years old. I hope you check back soon as I think we must be related as my grand parents were blacksmiths in Faygate for many years.
My paternal grandfather was John James Mitchell and his father was James. Johns wife, my grand mother was Fanny Jones.
I hope you come back to this thread at some point.

Hello, nice to receive just a quick reply, I thought I might be waiting for months. I would like to give you my email address but don't know how to do this without the world seeing it.
So....you are the son of Mabel and Stanley, I have had contact with Lorna, the grand daughter of Dorothy, it was a long time ago. I have spent 11+ years of almost constant researching my family tree and you are welcome to any of it that interests you. I have newspaper cuttings of John and Fanny Mitchell my grandparents and articles from the local paper. I even have one about James 1850 who was my great grandfather.
Albert was a trooper with the Lifeguaerds in the Boer War and died in 1917 of TB, but I expect you already know this. Fanny and Albert must have moved to Yorkshire between 1902 and 1905 as they were living at 2 Talbot Terrace, Horsham in 1902 and son George was born in Yorkshire in 1905.
In 1911 they were living at 29 Goxhill Place, Leeds.
My father was William Harold Mitchell 06/12/1905 to 07/07/1948 he was only 42 when he died and I was 4. His parents were John James and Fanny Jones she came from Somerset. I had a younger brother Peter who died in 2007 and I have two elder sisters, Molly 1932 and Maureen 1939.
My dad was in the Coldtream Guards and I believe he was also in the Metropolitan police for a short while. When he died he owned a garage/car showroom in Kingston.
I now live in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Sadly my lovely husband died of cancer 19 months ago.
If you know how to send me your email address I will reply with mine.
Best wishes to you
Wendy (Mitchell) Soall

I am intrigued by your research. I am a descendant of Ann Mitchell Jupp and did not know her parentage. My great-grandmother was Kate Charlotte Walder, daughter of Solomon Walder and Ann Mitchell Jupp/Ann Mitchell/Ann Elwood. I would be happy to share what I have, but I have no help for you on the Elwood line. But I can tell you that when Kate filled out her Social Security application in the US, she stated her father was Solomon Walder and her mother was Ann Mitchell. No mention of Jupp.

Wendy - I found your posts on other sites as well. Thank you for giving me some direction. The civil registration I purchased for the marriage of Solomon Walder and Ann Mitchell Jupp has Ann's Father's name blank. I believe your info from the actual parish register shows her father as Edward Francis Mitchell, blacksmith, with a line crossed through. Is that correct? Thank you, Kathleen

Hi Kathleen
Ann Mitchell Jupp was baptised at St Mary's Parish Church, Horsham, Sussex on 19/08/1827 she was base born. I have the parish records on disc for this church. Her mother was Mary Jupp.
Mary Margaret Jupp baptised 07/06/1807 Slaugham, Sussex died Horsham 1893 married Francis Edward Mitchell (known as Ted) on 25/12/1831 at old church St Pancras London. Mary was working in London and he married as Edward the name he seems to have used most of the time.
I am sure that Francis Edward Mitchell was born and baptised as Francis Edward Elwood baptised 09/10/1807 parents Matthew and Jane Elwood. I cannot find anything at all on either of them before this date. The reason I am so sure is that he was really Elwood is that when Francis Edward Mitchell died on 26/10/1888 his probate calls him Francis Edward Ellwood Mitchell (with two L's) his executors were two of his sons, William and James (my great grandfather). Also on his death certificate the informant is Margaret Walder, grand daughter.
On Ann Mitchell Jupps marriage Certificate to Solomon Walder it has father Francis Mitchell and occupation blacksmith and they are both struck though with a single line. I cannot prove that he is her father but I am sure he was. I have written info that Francis and Mary married as soon as he finished his apprenticeship. They went on to have another eight children to my knowledge.

Wendy - thank you so much for clarifying all of that - I would never have been able to figure that out from the records I have. Now I have a whole new avenue to explore. Will keep you posted if I find anything of interest.
Best regards, Kathleen

Hi Kathleen
You are welcome to anything I have found. As I was born a Mitchell I obviously have a lot of info on this line. I have the St Mary's parish records so if you want any look ups let me know. I also subscribe to Ancestry Worldwide and Find My Past.
Please can you tell me where I can find Kate Walders Social Secrity record or tell what it says
Best wishes

I am holding a copy of the original in my hand. Would you like me to scan it and send it privately? Or I can transcribe it.

Hi Wendy, Is it possible to send me the image of the parish record that shows "Francis Ellwood" crossed out and "blacksmith" crossed out? I would like confirmation for my records. It is quite a change of direction in my research.
I have done some preliminary searching and see what you mean regarding the difficulty of finding Matthew and Jane Elwood. I will certainly keep you posted if I discover anything of interest.
Thanks for your help, Kathleen

Good morning,
This is a very good site for researching blacksmiths; http://blacksmiths.mygenwebs.com/
And this one for all things Mitchell. He has a large data base of Mitchells and is always open to more names to add to it. http://www.devon-mitchells.co.uk/
