Title: Completed: Could some wonderful person date this Australian photo
Post by: History seeker on Wednesday 16 February 11 05:22 GMT (UK)
This is a photo that I believe is my 2x great grandmother. But dates would confirm. She was born in Bathurst NSW Australia in 1844 and died Burrandong NSW Australia in 1925. I have a photo of her with my great mother taken in abt 1902 and she looks much older and one not long before she died. All the facial feature's are very similar but in saying that so are mine and my sisters and sometimes our photos need to be double checked.
So if I could put a date on this photo it would help it is a photo of a photo the original is abt A3 size and is stuck in a discoloured carboard folder. I have not found the name of a photographer stamped on it.

Thank you
HS

Hi HS...well, assuming that the lady is fairly current with fashion this photo looks like about 1905 or so, with the high collar on the blouse, the long slim skirt and the cuffs at the end of the sleeves.

Is there any printing on the back? If so, could we see it please?

Cheers,
China

No there is nothing on the back but if it is 1905 it is not my great grandmother as I have a photo taken when her daughter was 16 years old (abt 1902) and she looks much older.

Thank you
HS

Although photographers advertised "enlargements can be had" they weren't really very good & had to be adjusted by sketching part or all of the photo. We do see many of these from the 1890's & early 1900's.This looks like some work has been done to her face & that's why she looks younger. My view is the same as China's,1900-05.

jim(not so wonderful although China would disagree)

Thanks,
The 2nd and 3rd photo's I posted are definitely Martha. The one on her own was taken long before she died in 1924/1925 and the other is of Martha and her youngest daughter taken abt 1902 when her daughter was 16.
So I now need to find out who the lady in the enlargement is.

Thanks for all your help
HS

For what it's worth, and I don't really know what I'm talking about here, but I think that face shape, the ears, the jaw etc. is quite unique, and may well be the same person.  Unless - unless of course, it's her sister,   ;D or her Mum,  ;D  or her cousin.
