HI
Have found a name on a headstone but can not find a death for this name. Maybe it is short for something, I just don't know what. Any ideas on what the first name CECY may be another name for? Death is in the early 1900's, Aberdeenshire.
Thanks, Szac

Cecile, Cecil ? --- not very doric sounding I grant ya!
What was the surname and date of death?

Hi
The name was Cecy Mitchell died Jan. 27, 1907, on a headstone in the Tough Kirkyard. I have looked on Scotlands People, and haven't had much luck.

Could be short or a derivative of Cecilia, or Cecily. Anyone have any other ideas based on old fashioned names?

I have often found it easiest to put in just the initial of the Christian name when searching. This is especially useful if you dont know whether a name has changed from e.g. Isobel, Isabel to Isabella, or if it is registered as Jane or Jean,Janet or Jessie..........

has anyone tried the internet, names and their abbreviations.

Have you considered that the person may not have died in Scotland at all? Many Scottish headstones record the deaths of family members who have died and been buried elsewhere - a bit like a memorial rather than a grave marker.
-
I have googled the name and there is a male in face book
Could we be looking for a male

Good thoughts, thank you everyone. I will check out some England deaths and see what I can come up with.
I, too have tried Scotlands People, too not much luck either.
I don't know the Christian name, so.....
thanks again, Szac

Have you seen the actual headstone or transcription? The Tough M.I's have been recorded & published. Perhaps there are places named on it? You could then look up the 1901 census for the Mitchells

Haveyou tried the Borders Family History Society. They are currently and have lists and photos of gravestone etc. Do not know how it works, whether you have to join, how much, if you have to pay for the info and photos. Probably, as they are doing this voluntarily and all they do is recover their costs or part of.

I don't think the Borders area covers Aberdeenshire, marcie ;)
-
Whats the bit of Scotland under Edinburgh but along the coast before Jedburgh etc. up towards Tough.
I wish I could remember what they said when I took a look. Ah! well ::)
just a thought!
-
Well I think that is the "Borders" area, but Aberdeenshire is way up above Edinburgh, so not covered by the Borders. :)

I know, I go passed Aberdeen every time I head up towards Dundee and beyond around Glen shee. But for some reason we never go up on the east coast, my oh always chooses to travel up on the M5, M6 and across to Penrith, then to Perth stop and shop before continuing to Ballater.
Have not been up there for the last two years.

I have the Tough MI book, and have looked on all the census from 1841-1901. In the 1901 the childrens names are Annie, Eliza, Robert and Alexander. Have deaths for all.
Thanks for all your ideas will keep on trudging thru! Certainly have been spending alot on SP!

I take it that you have tried the Alford Family History Society, they keep records of all the families that have lived in the area. Aberdeen etc. All the fishing villages, including deaths and graveyard names./areas.
