hello i hope someone can answer this my gr gr grandfather immigrated to the usa in 1862 i can not find him on a passenger list over here is there any records that someone has access to that can help for that year also whatwould have been the usuall port of entry for 1862 since ellis island was not here yet i have searched the new york list but no luck thak y

Do you have any idea at all where Thomas was from, as someone may be able to locate him on the 1861 census?

Boston would naturally come to mind, however many people traveled via Canada. Canada did not impose as many restrictions on those coming from Britain / Ireland as the US did at that time. Perhaps your ancestor landed in Quebec City or Montreal and went via land to the US.

Perhaps it was Wiltshire rather than Westshire??? (Wiltshire is a county in the south.)

If you search the International Geneaological Index at
www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org) for Thomas b1836 I think there are about three or four that come up. At least that narrows down your searches a bit.
