Title: Mussen of Dromore
Post by: Gortinanima on Sunday 13 February 11 14:46 GMT (UK)
Researching George Mussen born c.1810-1820 possibly Balleny, Dromore, county Down.

His son George Mussen junior married Sarah McGrady on 9 August 1858 in Banbridge registry office. Have details of the family from 1858 onwards but would like to make the link back to George Mussen senior [the family origins was in Derriaghy and Lisburn in county Antrim & the Dromore Mussen family descend from a James Mussen [c.1731-1803] of Derriaghy/Balleny who married Elizabeth Arbuthnot [c.1733-1816] of Balleny, Dromore].

There are lots of Mussen entries in Dromore Church of Ireland registers but none for George Mussen junior or senior.

A marriage in a registry office and no church records makes me think there may have been a connection with the Plymouth Brethren movement. Does this seem possible with any records you may have.

My gt gt gt uncle married Sarah Mussen in Belfast Registry Office in 1856.  They belonged to the Reformed Presbyterian congregation at Knockbracken so that's another possible religious denomination who didn't perform church weddings at that stage and which you may wish to consider.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The marriage of George Mussen to Sarah McGrady was a mixed marriage, he being Protestant and she being Catholic - the children were all raised Catholic. There are lots of Mussen baptisms in Dromore Church of Ireland registers [but no George].

The progenitor of the Dromore Mussens was a James Mussen who came from Derriaghy to Balleny, Dromore in mid 18th century. There are lots of Mussen births and marriages also in the Derriaghy Church of Ireland registers.

Some Belfast Mussens were buried in Dromore cathedral graveyard indicating that they were originally from Dromore.

I presume you are aware of this article on Ros Davies' website on the Mussens from Dromore - perhaps later information than you are looking for.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/WORDS/MourneObserverAll.htm#mussen

Seems to be taken from Mourne Observer.

Hi

Thanks for the information on Sarah McGrady.

I wonder if she is a sister on the McGrady family I am currently looking into. I have a Daniel McGrady who married Eliza McAteer.

The McGrady family also came from Ballyvicknakeely area of co.Down.
