Title: Missing Birth Records - BEGLEY St Helens
Post by: polly88 on Friday 11 February 11 22:02 GMT (UK)
I have a number of missing birth registrations from St Helens, and I have the baptism records of each of them, so very puzzling.  They are:

1)  Peter Begley, Sept 1884
2)  Henry Begley, June 1886
3)  Abraham Begley, Feb 1888
4)  Ignatius Begley, Aug 1890
5)  Joseph Begley, Jan 1893

They had 11 children and all were baptised in the same Low House RC Chapel, in St Helens, and 6 registered, so why on earch are these not registered?  Such a puzzle!

Maybe the spelling of the name was different,  Bagley possibly.

Or maybe they registered in a nearby Registration district.

Thanks for reply.  I've searched under every variation of Begley that I can think of.  Also looked at all registration districts in Lancashire, and then in desperation looked at every county!  Is it possible that there is a batch of birth registrations missing do you think?  I find it odd that children they had before and after this little group, are registered.  And they did baptise them.

Try West Derby or Prescot registration districts.

Thank you ellis but I have tried every registration district in Lancashire.  I keep going back to it all the time but they are not to be found.  I am sure there must be a chunk of missing registrations from that period.

Hi,

Found a reference to Maria Begley d of Rosea Begley born 28 May 1908.

She was baptised at St Joseph's Peasley Cross.

Regards

John

Have you contacted St Helens Register Office and asked them about the registrations of these children?

John - don't know who that is; presume it's Latin for Mary daughter of Rose.  I haven't got a Rose in the family.

Gibel - I have been to St Helens Library, which is where I found the baptisms, on microfiche.  I haven't been to the Register Office.  Would they have anything different from all the available online birth registrations?

Anyway, thanks for your interest folks!

John - I'd never heard of Peasley Cross until you just mentioned it, so I Googled it.  Did you know there was an explosion there in 1899 at the Alkali works?   It was in Old Mersey Times.

The register office would have the actual books of the birth registrations not the index. They will not let you look at them but they might be prepared to say look for one of the missing children if you explain what you want. You will rpobably have the date of birth as well as the parents' names. However they may charge I don't know.

It was just an idea. I would ring them up and ask them.

The thing is Imber I have spent £100s of pounds over the years on wrong certificates, and they were mostly when I was confident I had the right ones!  This Peter Bagley is too much of a long shot to risk another £9+ - name slightly wrong, year out, no connection with Wigan as far as I can tell.  I know they were living in St Helens when all these children were born (I have the other children's birth certificates; census records; baptisms), so I can't imagine why they would register a birth in Wigan.

Thanks so much for looking for me.  This Begley family is driving me mad!  And what is weird is that it is the only branch of my family where I haven't found another person researching them.  All my other branches I have made connections with distant cousins etc.

Thanks Ellis2159; I have just emailed them with details.  I did email them twice before about 1 - 2 years ago, but I never heard from them.  This time I made sure to offer them a donation!  Btw the website section on family history just gives an email address, there is no family history info.  Fingers crossed they reply!

i am also looking for information on my grandfather, Abraham Begley, who was born in St. Helens, but later moved to Liverpool with his parents and siblings. Im trying to find his marriage to Catherine Sweeney, originally from Castlebar, Co.Mayo. So far, I have had no luck in locating it, either in Liverpool or Birkenhead ( where they were living when my father John was born ) .

Hello Jac55 - I can't tell you how exciting it is to hear from someone researching the same family! I have been away from researching my family history for over a year now, as I have been ill.  I got an email saying you had replied to a post, and wow I hadn't thought it would actually be a relative (however distant!). As it is the middle of the night, and I am very very rusty at the old family tree, I will respond more fully when I can get my act together.

Now I think about it your name Jac55 seems familiar - have we been in touch before?

Got family here this weekend but will dig out papers in a couple of days and get back to you.

I had just discovered the family were from st.Helens, and I was always under the impression they were from Ireland doh !.My grandfather was Abraham and my dad was his eldest son.I am just on my way to work, but I couldn`t resist replying.Hopefully I will hear from you soon, enjoy your week end with the family. Jac.

Hi Polly88, do you think we share the same great grandparents, John and Elizabeth Begley ?. Mine lived at 4 Pickering st, Everton, Liverpool. My dad, John, Abraham`s son, grew up at this address and I have a vague memory of being in the shop, which my grandparents ran from the back of the house.I have a picture taken by my dad of his dad Abraham and his dad John in the yard of Pickering St.My dad always referred to his grandfather as Stumpy as he lost his hand in an accident at work, possibly the coal pits in St. Helens ?. My dad was about 12 when he took the picture and you can indeed see John is missing a hand/lower arm. He also took a picture of my grandparents in the same place, Abraham had to sit on a chair as my grandmother , Catherine was only 4.9ins tall !

Hi Jac - I am so sorry not been back to you with my reply but I've been quite poorly.  I still haven't had the energy to dig out my paperwork but just wanted to say briefly that yes we do share the same ancestors.  I am really delighted.  We must share our information as I am sure we will both have stuff unknown to the other. Yes I do know about great grandad's lost arm - my dad and family called him "one wing" - that weird Begley humour.  Dad said he lost it working in St Helen's glassworks.  Gosh we have a lot to talk about.  I will send a private message very soon with my email address. I can't believe you've got a photograph of him!! We have no idea what he looked like.

Sorry once more for being so slow in replying.  There is so much I want to say, I feel it will take me ages to formulate an email. I will definitely be in touch, hopefully soon.

Very best wishes.
