Thanks Janet for replying to me
thanks have already got those ones The James Halliday is correct
but how can I be sure its my William John Houston. His father samuel houston seems to be a mystery as he must have come out with his wife Mary Turkington from Ireland. As lots of info when he was in new zealand
On Samuels death certificate it says he has been in new zealand 46 years ( that makes it about 1861 ) and has belfast as his birth place
According to death certificate he had 2 males age 54( born 1852) ,age 48 ( born 1859) ,and 4 females living Age 39( born 1868) ,age 40( born 1867 ),age 46( born 1861) Age 47( born 1860
Any ideas
Susan

Hi - Just read your comments re Houston - Samuel Houston (spelt Huston) went to NZ in 1861 from Australian he was in the Military (Horse) his wife died in 1877 Mary - he married again a Harriet Annett in 1886 (you probably know that) I am puzzled how he could have had William Houston in Ireland in 1862 if he was in NZ when he was born... I am looking for a Houston too - gt gt grandmother was a Mary Tuskington from the UK could this be Turkington? very filmsy information we have on our gt gt grandmother perhaps we can sort out our info and come up with something concrete!

Thanks very much Susan - On Jane's death cert. her relations put William as her father and this sent me on a wild goose chase - until I found Samuel Houston - he married Harriet in 1878 (not 1886 as I wrote). On an Oz website it does have Samuel leaving Victoria for Nz with the military in 1861 and appears to have stayed there. Are you related to Samuel and Mary? Marvellous that you have their marriage cert. Any info I can give you please let me know. Pythinia.

Hello Pythinia & Susan, I am researching info on my g grandfather, Samuel Houston born 1 May 1852 in Lurgan, Co Armagh, N. Ireland as noted on a Cert for Engine Driving, issued in 1898 in Tasmania (found on FamilySearch.org) I believe he is the son of Samuel Houston & Mary Turkington. According to a letter he wrote (from his home in Launceston, Tas) that was published in the New Zealand Herald, Vol LIV, Issue 16483,
8 March 1917, pg 8 ... he wrote that he was an old time Auckland resident who now has 5 sons taking part in WW1. He says that his own father had fought in the Maori wars & he himself had served in the old Auckland Naval Brigade under Cpt Le Roy. I would really love to make contact & share info, also to get help with researching his siblings. My g g'father Samuel named one of his sons, William John, after his own brother according to the grandson of WJ. I have many photos I can also share.
