Mary MAHER (parents Edmond/Edmund and Ellen) b abt 1859, Toberadora, Tipperary married Thomas DWYER at St Mary's, Heathcote Victoria 19 Jul 1880. She was his second wife.
Children of this (that I have found) marriage: Honora(h) Kate b abt 1881, Edward John b 1883 and Richard Charles 18 Sep 1884. (Thomas's first wife died in childbirth at end of 1879 so I doubt that
I cannot see a birth for Kate (as she was known in the family). As Thomas's first wife died in childbirth at end of 1879 I doubt that Kate's birth would be mcuh earleier than late 1880 - not impossilbe, of course ;)
However what I would really like to find is the death for Mary. (I haven't yet got Thomas's death cert.)
The family lived in Mia Mia (registration district - Heathcote) for a long time; Thomas was the publican of the Mia Mia Inn and later a Shire Rate Collector. I have lots of info on him but almost nothing about Mary.
TIA ;D Judith

Judith
Was your Thomas the one who is buried at Heathcote Cemetery and died 3/6/1910 aged 53?
Sue
-
Thanks Sue - too many DWYERs in Heathcote/Kyneton etc ;)
My Thomas is this one:
1916, #14582
Thos Dwyer 67
Death Place: Heathcote, Victoria
Father: Dwyer Michael, Mother:Ellen Mccarthy
He may well have been buried in Kyneton but I would think more likely Heathcote. I shouldn't be so parsimonious and just buy the cert. ::)

Hi Judith,
Don't know if this is your Mary, but
Mary Dwyer died 1930, age 71 at Heathcote. Reg#9829.
Parents recorded as John Maher and Ellen Maher.
Cheers,
Janet.
-
Hi Judith,
I do not see the right THOMAS with headstone at Kyneton.
{Just seems to me like the sort of chap who would have had one by his position n the community}
Sue
-
Judith,
Thomas Dwyer and Mary Maher also had another daughter:
Annie Dwyer born 1899, at Redesdale, Reg#29304
Anne Dwyer died 1899, at Redesdale, Reg#15716
Cheers,
Janet.
-
Thank you , Janet and Sue.
I had not seen the baby Annie's birth and death so I appreciate that.
Thanks to another R'chatter (such kindness - thank you!) I now have the cert and he was buried in Kyneton. where his parents are buried, 29 October 1916. Is there MIs for his parents? Michael DWYER d 14 Aug 1884, Ellen DWYER d 6 Oct 1905. They are definitely at Kyneton.
The Mary DWYER that you found, Janet, certainly looks a possibilty.
Mary's father is definitely Edmond on the marriage certificate, but who knows? I do not have an arrival for her; no idea if she came alone or with her parents - too many Mary MAHERs! The witnesses to the marriage were not of her surname. She has always been a bit of a mystery - no family stories about her of any kind.
Thomas's death cert has her added on in the margin with a date six months later than the death cert. It does not say she's dead.

Very long indeed - I am very grateful to you for bothering!! These are all related but I haven't yet been able to unscramble them all and have only bothered with those in my direct line.
I do wish they had had a bit more imagination with names LOL. NOt only do they use the same names over and over but the actual names used within the family are different again - eg Honorah, dau of Thomas and Mary who I only ever heard of as "Aunt Kate" no wonder I couldn't find her for ages!
Thanks again!

Hi Judith,
Did you have a read through Thomas Dwyer's Will/Probate?
http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/indexes/index_search_results.asp
Cheers,
Janet.
-
Thanks, Janet. I had read that ages ago but had forgotten that part of the document is Mary's consent to her daughter being administrator. So she was still alive at the time of Thomas's administration being granted.
I haven't done any work on my father's line for ages so thought I should have a 'tidy-up' which is when I realised I don't have Mary's death. I do think she is likely to be the one you found.

I have just downloaded the cert for Mary d 1930 at Heathcote and it is the right one. She is buried at Kyneton. Had been in Victoria for 54 years so can have a bit further hunt for her arrival.
The newspaper death notice in 1945 is for my Great Aunt Kate - or Kit. Dad always called her "Aunt Kate" but my aunt used "Kit". She died before I was born.
Many thanks to all for your help.

I've just transcribed the death notice for Mary (not real sure of death date) from an online newspaper image at TROVE.
Advocate (Melbourne, Vic)
Thursday 11th September, 1930, page 34
MRS. THOMAS DWYER
Widespread general regret was expressed at the death of Mrs Thomas Dwyer, which took place at her her residence, "Tara," Mia Mia, early on the morning of August 10 [? faint]. Mr Dwyer, who was 71 years of age, was the widow of Mr. Thomas Dwyer who for many years was the owner and licensee of the Mia Mia Hotel. Mr. Dwyer was also the valuer and rate collector for the shire of Mclvor for nearly forty years. Mrs. Dwyer was a native of Ireland, but spent practically her whole adult life in Mia Mia. She was greatly beloved by a large circle of friends. Her loving nature was most clearly shown by her attitude towards her six step-children—her husband having previously married a daughter of the late Mrs Westblade, of Flower Hill Estate, Mia Mia, who, at her death, left six young children. The writer did not know for many years that Mrs. Dwyer was not the mother of these children so utterly devoted was she to them, and they reciprocated her affection warmly. She had three children, Miss Kitty, who lived with her, John, whose home is in New Zealand, and Charles, who lives in Melbourne. She had been in delicate health for many years, but had only taken to her bed about eight weeks before her death She was devotedly nursed during her illness by her daughter and stepdaughters. Throughout her illness she was constantly visited by the Very Rev. Fr. O'Dee, P.P., of Heathcote. Her funeral to the Kyneton Cemetery was very largely attended. The Rev. Fr. O'Dee held a service at the house and accompanied the funeral as far as Barfold, when he had to return to Heathcote for other duty. The Rev. Fr. Fitzpatrick, of Kyneton, officiated at the grave. The coffin was carried by Messrs. Michael Dwyer, John, and Michael Dargan, Joseph and Edward Dwyer, and Augustine Linklater, the sons, nephews, and grandson of her late husband. The day following the funeral Mass was offered at her home by the Rev. Fr. O'Dee for her eternal repose. R.I.P.

Thanks, Christine for this extra obit.
I have the death certificate for Mary -

Cause of death: 1) portal cirrhosis (10 years) 2) cardiac failure (12 months)
Parents: John MAHER, farmer; Ellen MAHER m.n. MAHER
Informant: P A LINKLATER, grandson, present at death
Buried 17 August, Kyneton cemetery, RC section
Birthplace: Holy Cross, Ireland
54 years in Victoria
Married 21 years (sic) Thomas DWYER at Heathcote,
Children: Honorah Kate 48, Edward John 40, Richard Charles 24, Anne dec'd
This is a case where the information on the D C is incorrect. Mary and Thomas were married in 1880 - perhaps the registrar wrote it down incorrectly as the ages of the children fit with the marriage date of 1880. Her father's name given on the marriage certificate is Edmund MAHER, her place of birth is Toberadora, Tipperary.

Hi Judith,
I think it means she was aged 21 when she married.
If she died in 1930 aged 71 then she was born abt 1859 and so would be aged 21 in 1880 when she married.
cheers,
Ros
-
Ahhhhh
Good thinking Ros - you're absolutely right - Mary was 21 when she married.
