Hi
Can someone see what the birth country is for Nichoas MOROS b. 1856 on the NZ naturalisations?
A brief mention in 1893 [PapersPast] says he was a naturalised Greek, and on an online tree he is said to be born on Psara Island, Greece, but his name won't come up on the index if I enter Greece.
With thanks
Koromo

Hi....the only info on the "Aliens Naturalised in NZ: 1843 – 1916" microfiche is name, occupation, place of residence and date of naturalisation. No mention of place of birth sorry.
In a nutshell, Nicholas MOROS, a fisherman from Dargaville, Auckland was issued Letters of Naturalisation on the 9th of March 1888
I'm guessing the fiche is sourced from the NZ Gazette. I have a screen-shot of the relevant page of the Gazette if you're interested.

Have you tried Tribal Pages? There is a Nicholas George Moros born in Greece listed on one members page.

Grrrrrr! When telephone lines go bad in this part of the world it takes so long for the fixit men to arrive. With luck I'll stay online long enough to post this!
Thank you very, very much to you all for the information on Nicholas MOROS. I thought he must have been Greek but because I couldn't get his name to appear on the index along with a birthplace of Greece, I started to get a bit worried. His daughter was my grandfather's second wife after my grandmother died — all long before I was born.
Gratefully,
Koromo
:)
PS. I haven't seen the Tribal Pages — will certainly check that out, if my broadband line lets me.

I also have family living in Cypress, sometimes quicker to use snail mail.
There are two Nicholas Moros on tribal pages. Hope one is your man.

I guess Cira is Psyra
It's hard to tell where Cira is meant to be. It could be the island Pseira (Nisís Psíra) off Crete, or Psara near Chios in the Aegean. I can't find a place specifically spelled Psyra on my Greek maps at home.
I also have family living in Cypress, sometimes quicker to use snail mail.
Heh, too true! ;) The repair crew came again this morning — with luck the line will stay fixed this time.
Thanks again to all

Hi Zeroyon and Welcome to RootsChat :)
So, is Psara Island (where Nicholas was born) the one near Chios Island? How come he ended up in Swansea — had he become a seaman/mariner? Have you ever found his marriage to Eliza FERRER/FERRIER?
Do you know if his daughter Despineo was the youngest child, or were there more children after her? I did meet one of her children many, many years ago but the family history bug hadn't bitten then ... now I know what I should have asked him.
(Sorry, so many questions! :-[)

Hi Koromo
Were you able to contact the people on Tribal pages? The first one listed has a number of the people you have written about.
Only trouble is I have tried contacting people on this site with little luck. Hope you have better results.

Yes that is the island. Nicholas went overseas with his brothers John and Socrates when they were young as there was little in the way of employment on the island. Nicholas was working on boats and ended up being based in Swansea where he met Eliza. And yes i have a photocopy of their marriage certificate which was June 1873. Despina was the youngest of 7. Are you a descendant of Nicholas?
-
Suzy :) I recognised the Tribal tree owner's name as the same owner of a tree on Ancestry, and I was able to pick up some clues. (I haven't tried to contact him/her on either site.)
Zeroyon, no I'm not a blood relation of Nicholas. His daughter Despineo married my paternal grandfather in 1915 after his first wife died — I am descended from his first marriage.
I have searched and searched on FreeBMD for Nicholas and Eliza's marriage — is it there?
In a rush right now, and will be busy the rest of this evening. I'll catch up tomorrow.
:)

So that would be Charles Brothers? Im not sure if it is there or not, i just have a copy in this book that i have.
-
Hi Zeroyon
Yes, he's the one — Charles Edward Henry BROTHERS, known as Harry!
I've found Eliza FERRER on FreeBMD, marrying in Swansea, June quarter 1873, to either George Jewell ARNOLD or the strangely-named Charles EIM. What name is given on the marriage certificate?
Cheers
