I'm trying to find out who Laura Eliza Quarrell's parents were.
She was born in Dec qtr 1841, registration district of Chippenham, Wiltshire with later census recording her birthplace as Box, Wiltshire.
I can't find her in the 1851 or 1861 census.
She is visiting Charles and Ann Woodbridge (nee Quarrell) in Abingdon, Berkshire in 1871.
She is visiting Charles (son of the above) and Elizabeth Woodbridge again in Abingdon, Berkshire in 1881 where she is recorded as being a "relative" and housekeeper (dom).
By 1891, she is a domestic housekeeper in Gateshead, Durham.
She dies in Mar qtr 1899 in Gateshead, Durham.
I'm trying to work out how she is related to Ann Woodbridge (nee Quarrell).
Thanks,
Alison ???

Hi
Odd, as she should appear in the 1841 as well, but I can't see her there either.
There is this one from 1851 Wales. It is down as Quance but has been changed to Quarrell so may be worth looking at.

She wasn't born until later in 1841, but she's still a bit of a mystery girl.

Thanks JeannieR and Jan,
I think I may have worked out the connection.
My Ann Woodbridge (nee Quarrell) is the granddaughter of William b c. 1770. There is a sketchy online tree with many similarities to what you've shown. It has Samuel being a son of William, so Ann is his niece, so that makes Laura her cousin.
Mary is Laura's mother and Jane, her stepmother. Sarah, Frank, Eliza and Ellen are all Jane's children. None of Mary's are with Jane in 1861. It still begs the question; where are they?

Alison.......
I think this is very likely your girl in 1861......
Boar Street, St Helen , Abingdon
Mary Quarrell / head / unmarried / age 33 / Straw hat and Bonnet maker / born Cheltenham
ELIZABETH A QUARRELL / cousin / Unmarried / age 20 / Straw Hat maker / BOX , Wiltshire
As a matter of interest, on the 1861 census, there is a John QUARREL, born 1795 , visiting the Charles and Ann Woodbridge at Abingdon. He is staed to be a visitor , born Barrow, Leicestershire.....

Mary Quarrell is Ann's sister and John is Ann and Mary's father, probably brother to Samuel.
I had seen that census entry for Mary but hadn't been able to work out who Elizabeth was. I think you're probably on the right track.
Thanks for your help.

I've just noticed the "cousin". Confirms it for me.
Another little loose end tied up.
Thank you,
Alison :D :D :D

Just had another thought :(
Couldn't Elizabeth A. be the stepsister born in County (Wilt) 1841?

Hi JeannieR,
It really wouldn't surprise me if Laura did end up in Scotland at some stage. This family is extremely mobile.

Hi, Laura Eliza was the daughter of Samuel Quarrell (b 1804) bricklayer and Mary Ann (nee Scott) born 6 Oct 1841 at Box, I have the certificate.
-
Hi anneq,
thanks for that.
Do you know if Samuel had a brother John (who incidentally was also a bricklayer)? John was born in Barrow, Leicestershire to parents, William b. c1770 and possibly Ann?
Alison ;D
-
Yes, their father was William b about 1774 don't know where yet, he died in Cricklade Wilts in 1836 his wife Ann died a few weeks before him same year. Whats your link? My husband is descended from Samuel Q :)
-
Hi anneq,
I'm descended from John, son of William and Ann. I was trying to track down Laura as she turned up at John's daughter, Ann's place at census time (1871) and then at 1881 at Ann's son, Charles Woodbridge's place. I've been trying to tie her into the family picture.
Alison :D

Cricklade fits too,
A number of John's children were born there, including my gg grandmother, Caroline.

I've just found Samuel's baptism at South Marston, Wiltshire on FamilySearch (or one that fits his birthdate and parents).

Apologies if I’ve already contacted you - my head is spinning after researching all weekend. I’m trying to find parents of Mary Quarrell born Abingdon c 1812. I have now pieced together her life in Cricklade area and Devizes & noticed other Quarrells in both Cricklade and Abingdon, but can’t find definite links. I wonder if you have stumbled on her as a sibling or cousin? She married Joseph Part of Cricklade & had 10 children including my maternal great grandmother. Many thanks! Tilly Steed

Hi Tilly,
Welcome to RootsChat. I’ve just checked my database. Sorry, I don’t have a Mary born in 1812. She most likely is a relative though. Just a matter of finding the connection.
Cheers,
