Title: Help deciphering handwriting please - (Completed, thanks)
Post by: geneaccount on Friday 11 February 11 11:09 GMT (UK)
This is from an Australian convict record from Tasmania. Can anyone hazard a guess at the first and fifth lines please. Second, third and fourth are a name and address: Jas Grimstead Kooringa Burra Burra. Last (sixth) is the date June 63. I am only guessing but I believe the fifth line may be Adelaide, the capital of South Australia where James lived.

This was found as a notation (written 45 degress) on the original convict record. James is the son of the person to whom the original record refers. No similar handwriting available on the page or pages either side. The rest of this page was written by several other (neater) people. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew McEwan

Is it 'by order of'
and Adelaide?

I think you are correct - Burra Burra is 158km north of Adelaide - well it is now, so presume it was back then too? And there is still an old pub there named "Kooringa".

James Grimstead, Burra and Kooringa all get a mention on this site

It looks to me like '???? made by' (mystery word looking like Gryy)

Could it represent Guarantee?

Thanks Colin and everyone. It reads like a modern day post-it note and I think the first part may be an abbreviation. It would read "Enq made by". Thanks again.

Spot on, Andrew.
My suggestion was on the right lines, but 'Enqy' fits the bill  ;)
