Title: William Edwards,Clerk in Holy Orders,Parr Mount
Post by: alism on Thursday 10 February 11 17:30 GMT (UK)

William Edwards, born Llanbadarn near Aberystwyth, was curate in Parr Mount between 1886 - 1893. He married a  Mary S. in 1890.Having checked census records could she possibly be the daughter of William Flaherty vicar of Holy Trinity, Parr.Would be grateful if someone could let me know whether this was the only C of E in the area and where to access the church records.
By 1901 the family had moved to Norfolk.

On www.freebmd.org.uk there is a possible marriage

Prescot Registration District September Q 1890
Volume 8b page 1089
Mary Sibthorpe Flaherty to William Edwards

The marriage doesn't appear on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk as far as I can see

Thank you for replying. I had checked the bmd's but posted in case someone had been researching the church or area and could possibly have more information such as where the church records are held.

Gibel

Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I spoke to a very helpful lady at the library who looked up the church records, confirmed my suspicions
and am now sending for a copy of the certificate.

Apologies for reopening a very old thread, but I recently noticed that Mary Sibthorpe Flaherty was one of the witnesses on the marriage record for my great grandparents Frederick Nutt-Smith and Emma Ann Rhodes, who married at St Paul's, Winchmore Hill, Middlesex on 27th July 1889. I'm not aware of Mary's relationship to my great grandparents, so I was wondering whether their names crop up in any of your research e.g. were they witnesses at Mary's 1890 marriage to William Edwards?

Other witnesses on Frederick and Emma's marriage certificate are F. W. Laycock & Elizabeth Laycock (Emma's uncle and aunt) and Henry George King (who I know nothing about). The vicar was A. C. A. Drought.

I also noticed that Mary was born in Dublin about 1865, according to a family tree on Ancestry, but I can't check that as I don't have a subscription at present. However, the Irish connection is intriguing because I recently found that Frederick Nutt-Smith was not who I thought he was - it turns out that he was adopted whilst still an infant and his real name was Harry Maturin, the illegitimate son of Charles Maturin (1806-87), a Northern Irish landowner. I'm currently investigating the new Maturin link, but if you can shed any light on Mary Sibthorpe Flaherty's background then that would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Steve

Mary Sibthorpe Flaherty was born in Dublin in 1863.Her father was the Rev. William Flaherty and her mother Mary Jane Boyd Heather. She married my g.g. uncle who was a curate with her father. I did obtain a copy of their marriage certificate and most of the witnesses are family members and one name which is very difficult to read but looks like M Elizabeth Eatock.

Thanks for that, most helpful. I don't suppose the Eatock name could be Laycock? Elizabeth Laycock's middle name was Mary.

Frederick Nutt-Smith/Harry Maturin is thought to have lived with a vicar for several years in the 1870s before he went to live with the Laycocks at Winchmore Hill. I wonder if the vicar was William Flaherty? I'll do some more digging to see what turns up.

Unfortunately, the name has been written along the black line at the bottom of the entry and therefore very difficult to read  first name looks like Martha definitely Elisabeth and could be Latoch Latock or Eatock

OK, thanks for checking. I'll update this thread if I find anything else that's of interest.
