Title: Collard Tredegar
Post by: djunna on Thursday 10 February 11 12:07 GMT (UK)
Hello

Can anyone help me with any info on my Gt Gt Gt Grand father John Collard 1853 Bedwellty.

I Have him on the 1871 census but it shows his parents as David and Margaret Robert?
Cant understand the surname changes?  I Know he later on became a butcher and had a shop on Commercial Road/St. His son also John (1876) Later on became a Master Butcher/ Slaughterman at the same shop i believe, Before being knocked down by an army motorcyclist on Sirhowy Hill? in 1942 ( Is this nearby?)

The family later on went to live at 33 Charles St Tredegar. My Gt Grandmother Lena ( John 1876 Daughter )Grew up with Nye Bevan who i think lived Next door. I was told last week at a Funeral that they also kept a pet Monkey at Charles St???   Please god let this be true!!!

Thanks all

Darren

Hi Darren, what are his parents names, are they David and Margaret Collard?

Hiya Steve

I Would think so but when i looked on the 1871 census i get this

David Robert    37
Margaret Robert    39
John Collard    18
Edward Collard    16
Sarah Ann Collard    13
William Collard    10
James A Collard    8
David Collard    5

I wonder if his name was David Robert Collard and there was only room for him to put David Robert. then he made a mistake with Margaret, putting Robert instead of Collard?

Thanks Darren

I had seen the 1871 census. Do you have a copy of their marriage certificate, might tell you David's middle name?

Maybe the Collard children were from Margaret's first marriage - Mr Robert being her second husband.

There is a death of a John Collard, June 1863, Abergavenny district - which included Tredegar
Also a William Collard, Sep 1864, also Abergavenny

Those older (35+) Collard males left in Monmouthshire all seem to have been born in Somerset.
Presumably coal miners transferring over the water once the Bristol & Somerset mines began to close?

Looks like a birth certificate of (at least!) one of the children is called for.

That will show father's name and mother's maiden name (hopefully).

Looks as though Margaret married for a third time ...

1881 Census:

Hiya all

Cant understand where the Probert part has come from.  so so far weve got a

Margaret xxx who married a Collard and Had

John Collard  1853
Edward 1855
Sarah 1858
William 1861
James 1863
David 1866

Then XXX Collard Died so she Married David Robert.

Not sure if there were any kids.

Then David Robert died so she married again?

Sorry but easier for me to understand this way

Thanks so much

What we are saying is that there is no marriage (on FreeBMD) between David Robert and Margaret.

But there IS a possible marriage between David Probert and Margaret.

The only time we see the surname Robert is on the 1871 census - maybe it's a mistake?

KGarrad  Thanks  im with you , Never thought of that. Iv gotta concentrate on one branch of my family at a time, instead of working on them all at the same time.

All of it is good info, bulking up that side of my tree, just lost one generation that i thought i had until i find who the Collard she was originally married too.

Thanks a lot

Hi John,

I believe John's parents were Edward Collard (1832 Tredegar) and Margaret Watkins 1832 (Longtown, Hereford). Married Tredegar 13 Sep 1847.
 Other children:

Edward Augustus     1854
Sarah Ann                 1858
William Benjamin       1859
James Albert              1863
David P.                     1865

I have been researching for my cousins wife.  Her gr grandfather was Edward Augustus.  I think Edward died and Margaret married David Probert in 1868, then Thomas Phillips in 1877.

Edward Augustus's family moved up to Rhayader, Radnorshire.  I've been reading the other posts and would be very interested to see which earlier Collards came from Somerset, as I can't find the parents of Edward(1832).

Thanks,
Sharon
