On my mother's side,Fricker is the family name.
Two brothers,George and Thos, along with their wives emigrated to the then Colony of Victoria on the Tornado, arriving in Melbourne,September 1856.
I have looked at shipping lists for that period but can only find Scottish voyages of that ship in 1855,
Can anyone tell me where passengers who had lived in St.Mary,Scilly Isles in 1856 would have boarded the Tornado for that voyage to the colony of Victoria ?
I believe the voyage would have taken about 90 days .Can anyone tell me what route the Tornado would have taken ?
Any assistance is gratefully received.
Thank you

A quick search of the census indexes shows that a lot of the Frickers seem to come from The Scilly Islands (registered as part of Cornwall)
If you give us some names & dates to work with we may be able to help :)
Linda
-
Linda, thank you so much for your kindness. I will try to put some names together .
I have packed a lot of my things and sent them back to Australia as I leave P.R. China soon after 11 years here.I will get my brother to open my cartons when they reach Australia and extract the names.
Much obliged to you !
Thank you !

Glad to help.
I suggest that you start a new thread with the information you find, telling us as much as possible, and what you would like to know. There's nothing worse than looking things up for someone, then being told I already knew that! ::) ::)
Hope the move goes well
Linda
-
Linda, That is great advice, thank you.
I absolutely agree with you about researching then finding the recipient of one's kindness is less than grateful.
I will put together a meaningful name list and a thoughtful information request. It will take time because of my circumstances right now but I feel sure I can in the fullness of time.
I really appreciate your good will and your great advice to me,a novice.
Thank you also for the move good wishes.
It is a nightmare posting parcels from here. You have to produce everything for inspection by China Post. You cannot seal any cartons yourself nor can you use your own cartons. You also have half of China watching you as you pull things from your carton, have them opened and inspected, then put in other "approved" cartons.Foreigners are street theatre stuff here ! There are 8 million Chinese in this city and 112 foreigners !
Best regards ,
philip
-
Hi Philip
When's the moving date? Will they insist on checking everything you take with you in the same way as the parcels?
Hope you're not going to any of the parts of Australia that have been suffering from extreme weather lately. Some of the RootsChatters have been affected but luckily no-one was hurt.
Keep us posted
Linda

Hi Linda,I move at the end of the academic year which is early July.
I will be too busy with my teaching duties to get all the packing and despatching done after the end of this month, hence the big shift operation I am doing now. I am on winter leave !I have already sent 11 big cartons by air post and they have arrived in Tasmania safely.Another 11 go tomorrow and that is the finish of the bulk sending.
I think Tasmania is clear of troubles but my home state , Victoria has been suffering and Queensland and Western Australia have been suffering two different kinds of disaster, floods and bushfires. Victoria has been having flooding.
I feel for these people very much and I am pleased that none of our members have been hurt.Yes,I will keep you all posted.
Best regards, Philip
-
Oh ! I didn't answer one question. I really don't know why China Post insist on checking and re-boxing things the way they do.You even have to supply your passport everytime-same with banking if you are a foreigner.
Leaving here, there will be the normal scanning of luggage and body scan and declarations, nothing more than that I think.
Best regards,
Philip

Hi Philip,
I've got some FRICKERS in my tree - not directly related, but married into my g-grandmother's ABBOTT family in the Frome area, Somerset.
If you check my web page (link in my signature) and go to "surname list" you should find them - if any names ring a bell, you're welcome to use any of my information.
Regards,
Patricia
-
Patricia, thank you for that information. I am not presently aware of any Somerset connection but I will look at that very carefully.
Thank you so much for your time and help. I will let you know how I get on and share what I have with you.
Best regards,
philip

I have a Welsh Fricker who married into my family.
Alan NZ
-
Alan, thank you.Was that in NZ ?
I am not presently aware of any New Zealand connection.
The Frickers connected to me went from Cornwall to the Victorian Gold Fields in the 1850s.
Sadly,my source material of this maternal link in my family is packed and on its way to Tasmania from here in China.
I can't access it properly until I arrive there in about July.
Where was the marriage Alan ?
Do you have a Fricker name ?
Some Australian towns connected with the Frickers are Digger's Rest,Lancefield,Romsey,( all Victorian country towns.
I would be interested to know if any of this is connected to your Fricker.
Thank you for your time,I appreciate it.
-
I doubt there is any connection, the marriage took place in England to a maternal cousin, he deceased some years ago regretfully. I do not know of any Frickers here in NZ but doubtless there are a few.
Alan NZ
-
Thank you Alan. You could be right,
If I do find a connect in the future,I will happily contact you with what I have got.
I lived in Auckland and sometime in Tokoroa for 31 years. I miss the place very much !
Best regards,

-
Triish,WOW ! right on the button !
I am certain I am derived from the brother George who landed in Melbourne on the Tornado in September 1856.with his wife and his brother and sister-in-law
Coghills Creek certainly is a place related to my maternal ancestors.
Working backwards:
My late mother was Norma Gwendoline Rose Fricker, born 17.10.1916 - mother Constance Gertrude Andrew and father George Herbert Fricker. She died 2001 aged 85.
There are two other siblings,Grace now about 96 and Charles, who died aged about 91,just last year.
.
My Great Grandfather was I think a John George Fricker,School Master of Digger's Rest.
There was a Norman Fricker who died in the 1914-1018 Great War in France and my mother was named after him.Could he be descended from Thos Fricker ?
My mother once had military discharge papers for (the 1791)George Fricker ,from the early/mid 1800s and I think he was discharged because of problems with his feet , ( going from memory).but I did not find them amongst her things when she died aged about 85 in 2001.She died in Melbourne,Victoria.
My grandmother,Connie Fricker nee Andrew,a daughter of medical Dr. Andrew and Mrs Secker of Edinborough,Scotland, was born in Clunes,Victoria in 1881.
George Herbert Fricker was I think younger than her but he died in either 1949 or 1950 in Melbourne.
My Grandmother,Connie died in Melbourne in 1975 I think,aged 94.
I am struggling somewhat without my meager research papers but I am sure of the above material.
I really appreciate what you have done to open up the lives of these ancestors of mine.
Your kindness and time is appreciated so very much.
Thank you !
Philip

there's a record for a George Frecker who left the army with a diseased foot in 1814 aged 32. He was discharged at Plymouth & the record mentions that he was from the parish of East Nile near the town of Enden in Wiltshire. Now, there's a parish of East Knoyle in Wiltshire with a chapelry called Hindon. The IGI extracted batch for East Knoyle marriages shows several Frickers.

Hello Osprey,George Snr. was a Chelsea pensioner ?
The diseased foot is in line with my recollection of what I saw of my mother's papers when she was alive.
Do you think the surname difference could be clerical error on the part of the original record keeper ?
These are really interesting leads thank you and I will look at them.
I appreciate your help very much !
Kind regards,
philip

Trish,This is all wonderful material.
I am going to work through it today,Sunday.
It is all on the button !
More and more recollections of my mother are coming to the front of my memory now.
I appreciate this great help very much !
You are very very kind to me,Thank you !

the Chelsea pension records are on Findmypast
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp
There doesn't look to be a dot above the vowel so looks more like Frecker, but I wouldn't worry about such small differences in spelling at that time, as it was far from set in stone. You can see that with East Knoyle being recorded as East Nile. Accents won't have helped either.
;)
-
Osprey, that's a great lead. I will get onto it today, Thank you !
I agree that accents and careless writers throughout history cause immeasurable damage to the quality of our searching.
They should have employed me each time.I would make sure I got it right lol
Thank God for lateral thinkers like you !
I really appreciate your help.It is tremendous !
Kind regards,
Philip

thank goodness for soundex/variant searches!

Parents JOHN and SARAH
Possible Siblings on same Batch;
ELIZABETH, 21 August 1789
SARAH 15 Jan 1796
JOHN 31 Dec 1797
I cant find a Marriage for John/Sarah!!
-
Trish, Wow !!! They really knew how to create names then. I love it !
I also had other examples of great names from the Fricker side " Queenie Cristabel", and from the Andrew side " Dollie".
The George Fricker # 1 material is really great, thank you !
My head spins with all the " Georges" in the Fricker family.
I am going to work through this material now and see where I am at,so to speak.
I really appreciate your help Trish.
Cheers,
phipps
-
Trish, I am finding the Thompson side very interesting. They were possibly farmers. or as you said, maybe farriers, due to the material you kindly sourced being difficult to read.
I think subsequently it was found to be more likely "farmer"
I am going to try to find out what type of farmers they could have been in the Scilly Islands in 1841.
And there is another great name " Honor",this time on the Thompson side.
I am starting to get confused by the name "Thompson" coming up again later down the line in the Australian Frickers Coghills Creek/Maryborough branch. I am working through that this week.
Charles Andrew Fricker,my uncle Charlie, who died at Woodend,Victoria in 2010,aged 91 had no sons so the direct male line from Herbert George Fricker is now at an end. Such a pity !
Thanks so much for all your help Trish !
Cheers,
phipps
-
likely marriage for John to Sarah Watts 22/10/1788, St Mary's.
-
Thank you Osprey.I will add that/insert that into my chart and see where I am at,
That is very useful- a great connect. Thank you so much for your help and time.
Cheers,
Philip

Hi Philiip
I have a few Frickers in the Morrish family in Victoria..some of the names in this thread, some do not.
I have the same immigrants Frickers as you do
A Rene (Emma Irene) Fricker b1898 married a Frank Morrish
Cheers...James M
-
Hi James M, that is very interesting. I have not heard of the " Morrish" connection before.
Which of the two brothers does the Morrish connection relate to ?
I don't have my papers with me right now but I am descended from George Fricker. He was the carpenter I think. His brother was I think Thomas and he was the blacksmith I think.
Could you tell me more ?
Thank you for your time,
Respectfully.
Philip
-
OK
George Fricker = Mary Thompson
son Thomas Thompson Fricker b 1826 = Caroline Mann
son William Henry Fricker b 1869 = Emma Krausgrill
dau Emma Irene Fricker b1898 = Frank Morrish
I have quite a few Frickers in the tree from the top set downwards
Thanks
James M
-
Wow,that is impressive James M. Thomas is as you are aware my Gt.Gt. Grandfather's brother. My Gt.Gt. uncle, right ?
My maternal uncle,Charlie Fricker of Romsey/Lancefield, Victoria died late last year, aged 91. Did you follow that thread ? He had 5 daughters and no son/heirs so when he died the direct line from George Fricker,Thomas' brother was finally broken.
George Fricker, brother of Thomas Fricker had a son, John George Fricker,my Gt.Grandfather and he was a teacher in many places in Victoria. He outlived my grandfather Herbert George Fricker and died aged about 93 from memory.
Some Fricker girls from John George Fricker are Queenie, Ethel Beatrice.
There is one Fricker daughter of Herbert George Fricker still alive. She is 98 and lives in Tasmania. She is my aunt.
My mother,Norma Fricker died aged 86.
It seems most Frickers have long lives, the exception being Herbert George Fricker who died in about 1951 aged about 67.
I was born in Melbourne,Caulfield but I am in P.R.China now.
How does one classify our relationship ?
I am excited to find another branch of the family. Great stuff !
I would like to keep in touch !
Respectfully,
Philip
-
Hi Philip
I have added your part of the tree and we are related by 13 steps..so not distant cousins.
I have sent you a pm on this as well
Cheers

Realise that this was posted quite some time ago now but info' may be of interest if you do not have it. Emma Irene (Rene) and Frank Morrish are my grandparents (mothers parents). Emma Irene is a sister of William, Laura, Percy (Fricker -buried on Malta after being wounded at Gallipoli), Ida and Doris (Dos). Emma Irene lived until she was 96 she had been a school teacher and spent much of her life in the Berrybank-Lismore district. My grandafther, Frank Morrish came originally from Kingston, near Ballarat. One of my brothers has a number of generations in both directions posted on ancestry.com Further details are available from there or from us.
I assume James M may a Morrish, but not sure where he fits in the Morrish family tree??
Richard
-
Hi Richard
Yes, I am a Morrish and the family is from Kingston. There still is a Morrish on a farm there. Frank was in partnership with Gordon Morrish with the Morrish Bros chaff business. The brothers were sons of John Morrish whom was a Bro in the original Morrish bros chaff business partnership. I am descendants of one of the other Bros from the original partnership.
Cheers. James M

The ship Tornado left from Liverpool.
My ancestor, Ellen Austin of County Cork, Ireland travelled to Melbourne on that ship.
During the voyage there was an uprising / Mutiny, on the Tornado.
There are articles on Trove about the Mutiny.
