Title: Anyone know if you can find photos of...
Post by: KAZ0679 on Monday 18 April 05 07:02 BST (UK)
A lot of my family worked in the mines (as did most, probably). I want to know if there's a site I can search.

also what about war service sites for men that were in the war but didn't die in the war?

Are there any sites on people that died in the mines? My mothers uncle was killed in a mining accident in 1940's - Thomas Briggs

Hi Paul

Have you  searched the local newspaper for the coal mining accident which was probably reported in it.  If it was a major accident then may well be in the national newspapers.

From the DMM site:

Briggs, T., 13 Mar 1932, (accident: 04 Mar 1932), aged 43, Filler, explosion

I don't think this was a large explosion, as there only seems to have been one other person who died, but Lindy Lou is right in that the local paper may have covered it.

I couldn;t find a record for a T Briggs death in the 1940's I'm afraid.

that was a great link Paul, I found my gggrand father who died in Hebburn colliery in 1912 unfortunately they transcribed his name as Jeswell instead of Jewell, so watch out for errors.
