Hi all,
I've come to a dead end with my Lewcocks, and I don't know the area well enough to move on. I'm looking for a James Lewcock born 28th Jan 1781 at Gillhouse.
He marries Mary Routledge 9th Feb. 1809 in Irthrington. He gives his abode as Tanpits. I'm looking for his family. His parents were not on the same parish records as far as I could see, so they must be from another village near by. I am planning to visit Carlisle archives (where ever they are now) very soon, but I do not know where to start looking. Any suggestions?

Hi Heinz 57 :) :D :D :)
I'm n ot sure what parishes you've looked at already.
Before you plan any further though, do you know that the record office here in Carlisle is closed untill late spring, now, after the move to the new premises at Harraby? Keep an eye on Bob's post and replies at the top.
During ther closure, the parish registers are actually available on film in the local studies library in The Lanes. So are BT's for Westmorland, some Nonconformists / RC / Quaker registers and local wills for all except the most recent dates with index and full copy will.
A large proportion of the local papers are on film in there as usual, and there is a run of the local transactions on the shelves as well as all the usual.
As far as your question is concerned, have you tried Brampton as well as Irthington.
When the Record Office opens, there ar5ed published indexes for all of Brampton deanery which would make your search much simpler. They're a commercially published version so should be available else where too, but I'm not sure where.
I'll have another thinlk.
Best wishes
Emms :)

I knew the archives were closed, but I did not know you could still look at records at the library.
Do you have to book a microfilm reader? Carlisle is an hour away by train for me and I would hate to be unable to get on a machine.
Many thanks

Hi Lynn :) :)
No you don'thave to book but you can so a good idea for you, especially if you're not here byu the time the library opens at 9.30.
They close earlier a few days now too, so it's worth checking on that whrn you ring.
Good luck with the search.
Emms ;) ;)
