Hi - I am trying to find out the whereabouts of my Grandfather and his brothers, I believe they were put into an orphanage between 1901 and 1912ish - when their Mother was no longer able to care for them. All 3 Brothers subsequently joined the Navy. The details I have are as follows:
Mother - Ellen Florence Stamford, on the 1901 census they were living in Camberwell, the children are:
William Gilbert Stamford - b 1896
Christopher Stamford - b 1895
George Frederick Stamford - b 1898
they had another Brother Hebert Harry - b1894, but think he stayed with their Father and did not join the Navy like the other 3 Brothers. So I believe they must have gone into an orphanage in Southwark, Camberwell between 1901 and around 1910. Would be grateful in anyone can provide me with information on how best to research this. Thanks in advance. Anne

Hi
Have you searched for them on the 1911 census?
You cannot request lookups from this census on Rootschat because of copyright law. You must search yourself.

Christopher would be to old to be in an orphanage in 1911 and possibly William.
A free search of the 1911 census shows William G Stamford aged 15 in Holborn registration district. He is an household not an institution. There is a George aged 12 in Bermondsey. He also is in an household. Their naval records will tell you when they enlisted.
If none of them were in an orphanage in 1911 without knowing which orphanage or indeed poor law system they entered it will be hard to find which one as London had quite a few.

Hi - I'm a bit confused because Herbert Harry STAMFORD was baptised in 1894 as a son of Stephen and Elizabeth STAMFORD, and he was with them (as Harry) in 1901.
-
Hi
Following on from avm228's post, Christopher Herbert was baptised 17th or 19th Feb 1895, at St Stephen, Walworth Common, son of William & Ellen STAMFORD; living 22 Sandover Road; father's occupation: traveller.

Anne, not answering your question, but for further info:
Marriage
St Stephen, Walworth Common
2nd April 1894 after Banns
Herbert William STANFORD, 23, bachelor, traveller, living 11 Silcote Road; father: George STANFORD, traveller
Ellen Florence YATES, 21, spinster, living 64 Bagshot Street; father: William YATES, deceased
Both signed the register, Herbert signed his name STAMFORD, so the curate may have made a mistake
Witnesses: Joseph BRYANT, X his mark
Matthew ?
This would tie up with the birth of Christopher at the beginning of 1895 ie 9 mths after the marriage.

Hi All
Well thanks so much for all the information which all ties up from my perspective. Ellen had another child in 1901 also called Ellen Florence and I believe the marriage with Herbert William then broke up - have not been able to find out what happened to Ellen or the child, but know that the boys joined the Navy and William G married by Grandmother. Just intrigued as to where the boys went before they joined the Navy and what happened to their sister.
Thanks a lot

Hi
FreeBMD has a marriage of Ellen F STANFORD Sep. 1/4 1921 St Olave to John G Boone.
Could answer your question of what happened to the sister?

Lee :)

FreeBMD has a marriage of Ellen F STANFORD Sep. 1/4 1921 St Olave to John G Boone.
Possible death for her:
Death, Sep qtr 1978
Ellen Florence BOONE born 11 Oct 1901
Southwark 15 0009

Hi avm
Well yes that is a possibility - the name on her birth certificate is Stamford - with an m not Stanford, so not absolutely sure, is it Stanford on the BMD?
thanks
Anne

It was Lee who found the marriage, but you can see it for yourself on FreeBMD: STANFORD.
The family seems to have flipped between STANFORD (as in the 1901 census) and STAMFORD (other records). This sort of variation was not uncommon.
Does Ellen's 1901 birth certificate give her date of birth as 11 October? If the birthdate is a match I would think you can take it that the BOONE marriage/death are likely to be her.
-
Hi
Yes the birth certificates shows the date of birth as 11th October 1901 so I think this is too much of a coincidence, I agree that this is more than likely to be her.
Do you think her Mother Ellen Florence Stamford (maiden name Yates) also changed her name to Stanford as I have not been able to trace her death - she was born in 1873. Someone in our family gave me a photo of her (they could not provide any other information) but she looked like she was around 70 years old?
thanks so much

Hi there,
My Grandmother was Ellen Florence known as "Flo". She was married to my Grandfather, John Gerald Boone. They had two children. My mother Eileen Mary and John Thomas.
I lived with my Nan and Grandad who retold many stories of their lives. I have a copy of my Nan's birth certificate, born on 11th October 1901 which is registered "father unknown".
It's facinating to find out family history!!!

Hi Bermondsaygirl
Must apologise as I have only just read your message dated September 2011. My Mother is 90 and her Grandmother was Ellen Florence Stamford, previously Yates, and her Father was William Gilbert Stamford, one of the Brothers mentioned in the rootschat notes. You have solved a mystery that we have been trying to solve for some years now i.e. what happened to the Daughter born in 1901, and I also have a copy of the birth certificate showing Father unknown. Would love to hear from you to find out more about the family. Hope you respond soon.
kind regards
Anne

Hi Anne,
Sorry for the delay in responding as I don't look on rootschat to often. My Grandmother told me that her mother remarried and became a Hill after Stamford, I know that there where children but not sure if they where step or half brothers/sister but my Grandmother was close to them, they where George, Edward, William, Bertie and Maude. Hope this helps in your search, please keep me posted. If you have any old photographs I would love to see them.
Regards.
Michelle.

Sorry for not replying sooner, but I also do not read Rootschat on a regular basis, but so pleased that you replied with further information. If I give you my email address then I think that would help in corresponding with you in the future, it is anneford1@live.co.uk. My Mother has not been well and she is 90 so any information I can let her have re her ancestors would be gratefully received. I will find out what I can from the information you have given me and revert back asap.
kind regards
