Can anyone tell me where the Wigan Sanatorium was ?
If there were records and if so is there access?
Why were people sent there?
Were there lots of illnesses needing quarantine?
Thanks

According to the WiganWorld site, it was at Whelley.
Looking at my old & new maps, there is still a hospital on the site, north west of the B5238. SD 591066 is the OS reference.
Judging by the age of one of my distant cousins who died there, I'd expect tuberculosis to be a common ailment of the patients.

It was opened on 10 October 1889

I know of one called Pemberton Sanatorium for the treatment of infectious diseases with 21 beds in 1914.
There was another called Whelley Sanatoruim.
There was a lot of TB around at the time but I think they had seperate hospitals for the treatment of it, one was at Wrightington, another at Astley.
Other diseases at the time were diptheria and scarlet fever.
