Title: Earsdon marriage 1797 lookup
Post by: Bonzo Kelly on Saturday 05 February 11 14:39 GMT (UK)
Isaac Taylor married Jane Thompson on 27 August 1797 at Earsdon.

If anyone has access to the registers or full transcripts, I would appreciate the information about the groom, in particular his parish.

Thanks.

There are two marriages shown on the Bishops Transcripts for Earsdon on 27th August 1797 but neither of them are between Isaac Taylor and Jane Thompson.
See Earsdon image 159 - or am I looking at the wrong page (I don't think so).

No, Jennifer, you are right - there are only two and neither are for this couple.  It's possible that an entry was missed when the bishop's transcripts were being done - it is equally possible that the record has been mistranscribed more recently.

Earsdon records are a bit of a nightmare to read and follow as I know only too well.

I can check the originals (hopefully this week) if that helps.

Not a missed marriage, the marriage does not appear in my transcript of the parish records either----BUT--- it does appear in the "banns called at this parish but the marriage did not occur there" section.  Says Isaac Taylor and Jane Thompson, both of this parish 27 Aug 1797,  So where did they marry then? And why would they if they were "both of this parish" not marry in their parish?

So the trick would be to see if there were children born to them in the area 1798-1812 that might shed light on where they were natives of.

Good thinking, Janis.  It could be a case of Shute Barrington to the rescue yet again  :D

A few of my Earsdon parishioners used Tynemouth from time to time - never could figure out why but it might be worth a look.

I looked Tynemouth and Horton, nothing with a father Isaac.

It might still be worth a look at the original records as I've remember that there are two sets for Earsdon!

Some years ago I found a marriage on microfilm for 1806.  Later I went back to look at it again but I used a different microfilm and it wasn't there.  Returned to the film I had first looked at and there it was.

I did say Earsdon was a bit of a nightmare, didn't I  ;D

Oh yes--a nightmare.  Seemed the births after 1812 had a bit of information if I am thinking of the correct parish--alot of info crammed into a small space with tiny writing but seemed to include the parent marriage place like in Scottish records.

You are on the right parish, Janis.

It seems that when standard records were introduced in 1813 the vicar of Earsdon was not impressed - he continued to write all the information he was used to doing, straight across the columns.

Very informative - if you can read them!

I think the next time I am in England I am going to print off all those pages and inspect them with a magnifying glass at my leisure--but do my copying at Tyne and Wear.  It is not a hassle there.

I think we need more information to procede on this thread.

This marriage is on IGI as an extracted record so I'm still wondering whether it has to do with the 'second book' I mentioned before.

I'm going to take a look on Wednesday anyway - just out of curiosity.

I looked at Earsdon marriages but there definitely isn’t one for this couple.

The banns were called on 13th, 20th and 27th August so perhaps the transcriber picked up this last date as being the marriage date.

So either they married in a different parish (and why would they?) or they didn’t marry at all at that time.

We want to know if they had any children from 1897-1812.  Sometimes those baptisms gave information that could be useful.
