From 1904 to 06 my grandparents, Arthur R Knight and Annie Knight etal were living at 70 Bishopric St Horsham W Sussex. I would like to find out who else might have been at this address. Are there street directories I might be able to access to learn this information?

Hi Peggy,
I see you're in the States which makes matters more complicated :(
I suppose you mean who else was living with your grandparents at that time?
Normally you could use electoral registers but that would only show adult males, if you're looking for children that doesn't help. Street directories, again, would only note the head of household.
If you could tell us specifically what or who you are looking for perhaps we can find another resource,

Hello Jane, thanks for the reply, yes I was looking for other adults who may have been family. Grandfather was in the military, calvarey so they seemed to move around a lot. Two of their childrren were born here. 1907 finds them in Shaftsbury Dorset where two more children were born and where Arthur had an appendix operation. I don`t have an address here for them. On May 9th1910 they sailed to Canada. Grandfather died there in 1920 and in 1927 grandmother came to the US as did all the children.
So thanks for your interest.

Hello again Jane, hope I`m not being a pest,
regarding the street directories at Horsham W Sussex it occured to me if they are indexted by house number wouldn`t all at any particular address would be shown by head of household? What I`m trying to say if it were , say a two family house or a boarding house I expect all family names would appear. What do you think?

Peggy, I haven't come across directory listings as you describe but that doesn't mean they don't exist ;)
Have a look at the following link. http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/ I looked through one for 1905 using, 'bishopric' as my keyword (it doesn't give a result using 'street') which leads me to believe it was a small area in Horsham rather than a street. Nothing came up for 70 Bishopric.
Bear in mind that your grandfather was probably renting the house & that directories were usually compiled at least a year in advance of publication. Anyway, have a look.
Also have a look at the West Sussex Records site http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bpn/ They might have something.

In Horsham Bishopric doesn't have "street attached". It is the name for the stretch of the A281(Guildford to Brighton Rd) that goes in to the center of Horsham from the west.
You can see the road on www.streetmap.co.uk by just entering Bishopric - it appears to be unique on the map site for Horsham.
Good luck in your searching

I also have Knight ancestors in Horsham in the 18th and 19th centuries, I wonder if there is a connection. Can you tell me anything about Arthur's father or grandfather?

Does anyone out there have any information on the Michells of Stammerham and the Field Place Estates.
