Title: Woo hoo 1911 census!!!
Post by: Gembar on Saturday 05 February 11 08:39 GMT (UK)
I went to our local library yesterday for an hour long free "fix" of family history research, when I was told by a fellow researcher that our lovely library have now paid for us to go on the find my past website for free and so we can now view the images of the 1911 census. I was in heaven!!! My remaining time went far too quickly. Guess where I am going to be each day making the most of my free, hour each day, web access?!! I do hope every library will do this to give all of you the access too.

Many libraries in the UK have free access to many of the genealogy sites, including Ancestry and Findmypast (who at present hold the complete 1911 census records for viewing).

But some will only have access to 1911 census for free for a limited amount of time and viewings.  This happened last year in some libraries.

So check with your local library to see what sites they have access to and if it is free for a limited period.

Also some libraries do require you to book your hour in advance and you cannot afford to be late and if in a popular library, you will only get your 1 hour and no more as someone else will be waiting.

Advice - make a list of what you want to look up and if possible take a USB stick and save all your findings to this to take home to look at on your own computer at your leisure.  Also always take some notepaper and pencils (not pens -frowned upon by most places) and ENJOY :D

The library nearest my work in Hampshire which I have been using for Ancestry access, have recently got free access to FindMyPast as well, much to my surprise. I think it's available in many Hampshire libraries (though their website hasn't been updated with this). So as long as the 1911 census is free with the FindMyPast Library edition, it will be accessible, hopefully!

Another reason to join in with the support of the various Save our Library groups that are springing up all around the country.

I just contacted my library in the hope that alongside Ancestry they may also have subcriptions to Find My Past which I hadn't realised, but they have confirmed that they only have Ancestry - sigh.  However, I registered with Find My Past on the 7th Feb (but not signed up for the free trial or a subscription), have regulalrly done a number of searches across the free 1881 transcripts and today, without any notice or information that I have clocked, they've added 25 credits to my account so that I can explore a little more!  So a sigh has turned into a bit of excitment!!

Hi

If you have not got a USB stick or the computer has not got a suitable socket on view you can always send your findings home as attachments to an e-mail provided you remember your e-mail address. Send more than one e-mail if you have many attachments as some services limit the size of e-mail attachments.

All the best
