Year of manufacture 1942 - don't know whether I'd pass my MOT!
It's on my profile!
-
Perhaps more relevant (and previously discussed) why don't they say where they live - if only the country?
It would make it so much easier to help people
Linda
It's all on mine :)
-
mmmm I agree - I wish more people would say where they live.

I agree that putting the country where you live could be helpful 8)
I fail to see how knowing how old someone is, in any way impacts
on their ability to research or on our ability to assist them ;D.

A bit like Facebook, where people post photos of themselves taken 30 years ago ;D

Could be classed as a rather personal question by some....

I am 66 and where I live is on my profile.
I agree with Linda, it would be helpful to know which country at least, 8)
I think this has been mentioned before.
I cant see that a county/country in your details could compromise your identity. Kooky :-\
-

Joy there are some really young people - I know 1 who is only 13. Sometimes the way the question or statement is written is really nieve. By looking at the age it helps understand why they've written like a school kid. ;D
Oh and I am a female ted born in 1967 in England but have lived in Australia since I was 5. Most of that is on my profile. ;)
-
I'm a member of another site and on there they put your national flag under your user name,

Hi ,
simple reason:It's the same reason why I don't give out my name, full birth date and my exact address on the internet.
Fraud. weirdo's , nutters just to give a few of many, many reasons -for privacy reasons. I think some people give out far too information , it's so easy to trace to an exact street and house number given some of the info some people post .
Besides I really don't understand why knowing a person's age will help others to help you on here . I've known really naive 60 year olds, whilst I've known some real worldly kids. Age has nothing to with a Person's ability with genealogy. I have what country that I am in my profile for a good reason , but I certainly don't put my exact location such street address ,neither will I put my age .
I never have asked the ages of anyone on here and never will.I have never needed to know for any research I've ever done for anyone here. I think it's far too personal and rude to ask others that. If they want to give that information to you in the first place they will, but you shouldn't ask for it
" I know 1 who is only 13. Sometimes the way the question or statement is written is really nieve. By looking at the age it helps understand why they've written like a school kid.
" quote
I also think it is not a very good idea for anyone under 18 to broadcast their age on their profile especially a 13 yr old . Do you know how many children have been groomed and duped by adults. It is dangerous.
Kind regards

As my Grandma used say 'as old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth'!
-
I just don't see why some people are so touchy about their age - as long as I'm still here and causing chaos and mayhem to my friends and family, I don't care who knows how old I am :-* And, yes it is on my profile - I'm 68 and proud of it ;)

I think that it is helpful to people trying to advise if at least the country and preferably roughly where in that country is included in everyones profile. It is extremely embarrassing to suggest that someone visits the Guildhall Library in London and then to get a reply that they live in Australia or even Scotland when that information is not included in their profile.
Age is unlikely to be relevant but there are other personal details that some people might consider worth including.
-
I have read what all you youngsters have posted here and I really don't mind if youy wish to conceal your age.
I very much doubt that sexual predators will choose a site such as this to contact teens considering the wealth of sites with personal data and populated almost solely by teens.
That may provide some barrier to effective help as there may be resources and financial implications not available to most teenagers.
Town, county, at least the country where you live is really very important for the obvious and well-stated reasons given by some of you.
-
Think how we trace descendants --- with minimal info ---- what could a fraudster do... with name - area - dob...etc...
That is why I prefer not to broadcast too much.
As it is with info I have given when asking for help.. a good researcher can find what they need about me.!!!!!!!!
NOT Paranoid, just careful..
xin
-
Facebook and other sites contain a wealth of personal info on users profiles which they put so a fraudster would probably use one of those sites rather than this site.
-
Don't underestimate what that sort of person is capable of or what they will resort to in their mission. Just a key word or two could send them to this site and from there it would be easy to find their targets if children publicised their ages.
That, however is not the reason why I don't disclose my age (I am an adult). To be honest I'm sick to death of people/institutions asking for my age or date of birth when it's not relevant. I either refuse to give it or if they insist (usually on the basis 'we can't put you on our computer system') I lie. If you report a crime the police now want your d.o.b. before any other details and you have to give it to them. I'm not the criminal for heaven's sake!
What difference does it make to this site as to how old we are? Although I appreciate that this is a sweeping and sometimes unfair generalisation - if you want to guess at which generation we belong to, look at our spelling and grammar!
-
AGe and all other personal details irrelevant, except perhaps country for time issues.
I like to be a mystery....... ;)
-
I am not naive(nor paranoid) regarding giving information to all and sundry. neither do I believe that my personal details are hidden . (Any serious hacker can detail every aspect of my life)
After all that is precisely what we are doing ,with regard to our relations...
So on here I put my age..so that any younger member can query, perhaps the social life from the 30s and 40s..
Where I live can possibly help someone looking for information in this rural area.
I certainly would not put any personal details on social networking sites (having seen the details young relations have put on .)
I am more concerned with GR contacts who put on their Trees personal details of living relations
Besides there is a certian amount of smugness? pride? satisfaction ? in knowing that one is staggering towards 80 and wondering if one will equal my Ma .who made 90..
Come to think of it. perhaps I really don't care now, who knows what about me!! Sort of legacy to posterity!!

I am one of the youngsters on this thread then at nearly 29 but am not a kid and will not be called one. I am almost 30. I shall be 30 in July 2012. I dont mind broadcasting a bit of my personal info. Obviously not address or tel no but date of birth and age yes.
-
Surely in this hobby of family history it is one's mental age that matters -not physical age. Why should my physical age control the responses I get to any queries I may post, or input I may offer? I really do not see why I need to know the ages of other rootschatters. It isn't relevant.
I agree that it is interesting to know where other rootschatters are located, but that could also have a negative impact (if there are any biased chatters - I have not met any). Without disclosing my age or country of residence I have always received pleasant and helpful replies and response to my postings.
This is such a happy and helpful site - thank you rootschatters.
-
On Friday I was communicating with an Australian actually about local historic buildings rather than family history. We had a number of important misunderstandings which were easily sorted out once he had told me that he was in Australia.
It is extremely important to know in which country and preferably in which county a person is located and which is their native country. I find I need to check this information for many of the replies that I make on this site and sometimes find it difficult if not a little embarrassing when it is not available.
-
I dont know why you'd find it embarrasing?
FWIW I dont recall having a problem with someone not showing the Country in their profile. If something isnt clear I just ask ...
-
It becomes a little embarrassing when I use words or expressions which people living abroad don't understand or when I advise them to visit a records office etc. only to be told that they live at the other end of England. Surely it is only politeness to include such minimal information in ones profile.
-
Surely it is only politeness to include such minimal information in ones profile.
I cant see how politeness comes into it - they are merely excercising a choice in what they can register in their profile?

Surely politeness is thinking about the needs of others and making their life easier!

politeness would include respecting others' decisions too ....

Just as a matter of interest, how many chatters actually make a point of looking at a profile before responding to a query or comment?
-
Just as a matter of interest, how many chatters actually make a point of looking at a profile before responding to a query or comment?
I usually do, after the first post. If the topic warrants further postings then the country of the originator may be relevant.
Just my opinion.
'Hat.
-
If it's a question of advising them to visit the Record Office I usually have a look to see if they live anywhere near it. I've sometimes replied to posts thinking that because of their local knowledge, the person lives locally. Not always so! They often have that knowledge because it's about the area they originated from but now live miles away.
I don't have any objection to stating the area in which I live in, even if it's as vague as Northern or Southern England, Wales or Scotland, I find it helpful.
-
Depending on the type of query and records involved I often check a persons profile before answering. e.g. if the records they need are RC parish records available in the National Library in Dublin and they live Liverpool then I'll suggest a visit as a possible option. If they live down-under then I'll suggest a pay-website if that option is available.
It also can help to know roughly where someone is located when phrasing responses relating to locations. e.g. not usually much point in diving into details of the townland and civil parish in Ireland where their ancestor lived if they are not based in Ireland and know nothing of Irish land divisions.

Only if I think my answer may only be relevant to a particular country.
-

Hi,
you will never know how your above statement me smile.).
you've basically summed it up in 7 words,.
Very kind regards . I'm glad there are few people (like yourself) out there who understands real politeness)

Nick, I'd never have believed it! :D ;)
There's an old saying "A man is as old as he feels and a woman is as old as she looks" - you obviously feel young.
Just as a matter of interest, how many chatters actually make a point of looking at a profile before responding to a query or comment?
I often look to see where someone may be from as it may alter what you say, for example it's not much use telling info about adoption in Australia if the enquirer is talking about UK, or vice versa.
Also, it's a bit useless to tell someone how to get to some record office only to be told 'yes, I live there' !!
Shane, people who don't live in Ireland can know about townlands and parishes, you know ;D

On the basis of my reply #42 - sorry I don't know how everything got into the blue room - the other day a 30 year old hunk told me I didn't look old enough to have bought timeshare 30 years ago!!
You can imagine my OH's reaction to that! :D ;D

PS And no, he wasn't trying to sell me more timeshare ::)

I am 38. And I get strange looks when I go into research rooms! I'm obviously far too young to be into family history :-)
Does age really matter once you're over 21???? Its never been something that bothers me.
I don't think I ever look at anyone's profile either.
-
@ Lisa .....age doesn't matter at all, just unusual for geneology research ..in my opinion,,,,I say go for it and you'll have many many years of fun ;D
I never think to check profiles either, occassionally I have for one reason or another but not the norm.

Still cannot understand why people looking for time based information and location are here on the site. and complaining about giving the same information
Surely Time & location are what we are all looking for. i am proud to give any help and info to anyone who is looking for it, if you want to hide it you shuldnt be into genealogy

My mother is 92years old this April she is already a Great Great Grandmother :) if and I know i'ts a big if she can manage another 12years she would be a GGG!!!
I'm A Great Great Aunt now at 57 :) :)

When I asked my gran how old she was when I was a little girl I got this response
I am as old as my tongue and a little bit older than my teeth
Am now off to look at my profile, cannot remember if age etc., is on there.
But I do agree that country/county of birth would help, especially when people for those who do not live in UK and are completely befuddled by where places are.
-
I am as old as my tongue and a little bit older than my teeth
;D I got the same answer from mine ;D
I agree it would help

I'm posting that I'm 30, as in less than a week, I'll be 31 :-\
I started when I was 13, after a school project on heraldry meant I went to my granddad for help (who's been researching the family since the 60s). He "bent my ear" for many, many, many, many hours after that, until his death in 2005 and he got me interested in it. I've had months and years "off" and part of me wishes I hadn't got interested until I'd retired, but hey ho!
