Hi All
Found a John Burnett in the index.
Married Florence Watson in 1914/c3726
Child John born 1914/c15011
Death 1940/b47563
I am hoping this is a John Burnett from Ireland born 27 May 1867,father was also John and mother Margaret Love.
Can anyone get me any more information,to prove or otherwise my theory
Many thanks

Hello Curley,
a search on ancestry provided that death and marriage record....same parents is usually a good clue to tie people together. perhaps if u order that certificate it should state where birthplace and how long he has been in Australia for.
Name: John Burnett
Death Date: 12 Apr 1940
Death Place: Queensland
Father's name: John
Mother's name: Margaret Love
Registration Year: 1940
Registration Place: Queensland
Registration Number: B047563
Page Number: 303
I did find a passenger list that may fit...he may have lied of age by two years to say he was 18....? this is the closet on ancestry though they wouldnt have every passenger list (i would think)
Queensland, Australia, Passenger Lists, 1848-1912
about John Burnett
Name: John Burnett
Age: 18
Birth Year: abt 1865
Ship Name: Duntrune
Port of Departure: Dundee, Scotland
Port of Arrival: Brisbane
Arrival Date: 29 Dec 1883
bit odd that he was in QLD for so long before married....1883 till 1914...but not impossible.
a search of marriage records as you would know shows him to be the only john burnett married so perhaps that is correct and his wife was Florence. although a search from 1883 (year of that arrival) shows possible first wife in Australia is..
1885/C1092 Burnett John McDonald Mary
Hope that is some thought provoking information

Hi Lauren
Thanks for your extensive reply. Unfortunately I live in Northern Ireland, far from the records office.
Following on from your observation on the marriage in 1885 with Mary McDonald, I found at least 12 children born between 1886 and 1905 all credited to John Burnett and Mary McDonald or MacDonald.
Four died and I have a death of a Mary Burnett in 1905. Plenty of food for thought.
Is there any cemetry check or census for that period so we could locate town or district.
Many thanks again

Curley,
There are some electoral roll details for a Florence & John Burnett residing together at Ayr in North Queensland, between 1919 and 1949 where John is a sugar cane farmer, there also are burials at the Ayr cemetery for a Florence in 1951 age 55 and a John in 1968 age 77 but this John is a lot on later than your man.

Curley,
I will probably be going to the Qld State Archives in the next week or two, and I can do lookups for John. For example that immigration record on the Duntrune, may say that John is from Ireland. So could be worth checking. There are a couple of other John Burnett immigrations but ages seem wrong - still may be worth a look.
Also if a death date and area is known it can also be worth checking for wills as they may contain the d/c.

Hi All
Thanks for all your efforts and offers of look ups. It great to find such help so far away.
After looking in Ancestry I,m am more confused.
I found a John Burnett ,parents Alexander and Ellen Sims on a family tree with a wife Mary McDonald, and death in Charter Towers 13 Sept 1935 on this tree are listed a lot of the family I thought were my John,s !!!!. My John died 1940. So my problem is now ,which John Burnett married Mary McDonald in 1885 ?
By the way where is Charter Towers in relation to Brisbane?
Sorry about too many problems but I need a strong drink

Curley,
Charters Towers is in North Queensland inland about 110 km from Townsville with Townsville about 1400 km from Brisbane.

If you are certain that your John died in 1940, then his death certificate should give wife's name, parent's names, place of birth, how long he'd been in Qld (so a chance to work out when he arrived), children's names and ages etc .... everything you need really. :)
As I said earlier, it would be worth checking for a will/intestacy in case he left one, as the d/c would be included with it and this will save you substantial cost and hassle, as purchasing Qld certificates is a bit of a nightmare.
Do you recognise the Thomas and Robert Burnett who are buried with John?
As an aside, it is worthwhile checking other trees but it's probably less confusing to do your own research. And, of course, the other trees may be wrong ... ;)

Hi Gerry,Debra,and Ruskie
What a great effort. I think you have established my John Burnett and family.
All I need now is the word Ireland from some quarter to be 100% sure.
By the way Debra had you this info on file or are you related to the family?
many thanks everyone
Curley ( Austin Burnett)

Hi All
Following on from all the info you all supplied.,I found a birth date on Ancestry for John ,jun,29 Sept 1890.
Where has John gone? No mention of him in the fathers obituary in 1940 or the mothers in 1946. Also missing would be Margaret Mary,as I presume Miss B is Elizabeth . In the mothers obit we have a family called Whiteoak, I presume this is Elizabeth,s married name so we are looking for a wedding between 1840 and 1846.
Any help on all this would be appreciated
Austin

Hi Curley,
No I am not related, just helping out.
I had a look at the WHITEOAK connection in case it gave any further clues. Mary's funeral notice says "Mr and Mrs A.E. WHITEOAK and families" - Alfred Ernest WHITEOAK married Evelyn BUNTING in 1900, and Evelyn's sister Rosalie married John PEACOCK in 1913. They may have been connected to Norah BURNETT's husband Frederick PEACOCK. A bit tenuous, but the only connection that I can find.
Your best bet is to get a copy of John and Mary's 1890 marriage certificate as the information given will be from John himself, and it should name his parents and his place of birth. I would contact the registry first though to confirm the registration number before ordering as it does not appear in the online indexes.
Elizabeth appears on the 1937 electoral roll with her parents in Payne Street, and her full name is given as Elizabeth Jean. Unfortunately a possible marriage date and death date would fall outside the years available for searching.
Debra :)

Hi Debra
Thanks for that.
Following on in the search for John, jun, I have him living at 24 Payne St in 1913 electoral Roll.
Possibly the marriage I referred to at the start of the post John to Florence Watson on 28 Feb 1914, Ref C3726 is him, and then moved to Ayr where he appears in the Electoral Roll 1919-1947 as ref to by Aussie 1947 ,plus deaths in Ayr cemetery. Any online newspapers for Ayr,looking for death notices?
This sounds too simple to be fact, but good theory.
Any observations most welcome.

Curley,
There was a John jun a teamster residing with John & Mary at Mt Wright in 1913, 1919 & 1925!
Gerry

Curley,
The John & Mary Burnett with John jun residing at Mt Wright are probably another branch of the Burnett family with the same names plus a John jun and the one you have identified at Payne St Torwood are more likely your Burnetts.

Debra identified Norah marrying Frederick Peacock and they are on Electoral Rolls at Toowong which is very near Torwood between 1936 & 54.
I'm a bit confused about Thomas Burnett.
Thomas was identified as being born in 1906 and we have a Thomas residing at Payne St with John & Mary in 1937 but there is a WW2 record for a Thomas William Burnett born 15th Nov 1906 at Ravenswood in Qld with his enlistment place as Lucinda Point in 1940 and the 1937 Electoral Roll has Thomas William Burnett residing at Lucinda Point.

Hi Gerry
Thomas William was born to John Burnett and Mary McDonald, refC6965
Thomas was born to John Burnett and Mary White, ref 10640, both 1906 I think you have answered my thoughts on my John going to Ayr,cannot be on two lists as in 1919 according to your info, so back to start again.
Cheers
