Hi and welcome to rootschat
Have you found the birth registrations for any children born after 1837? Getting a certificate will give you their mother's maiden name and that should help with the marriage. What about the baptisms? Have you looked at the original entries to see if they hold any clues?
If you can give us a census reference so that we know we have the right family then someone may be able to help further. Metcalf/e is a very common name in that area.

Hi there
Found a christening of an Anthony Metcalfe 21/06/1813 Hawnby father John mother Mary. This was on the Family Search site. In the1881 census his place of birth is HOwnby and Anthony is living in Gainsborough, married to Harriet. He is a bookseller and there are 3 boarders.

I see that in 1851 they have an unmarried sister in law living with them. Surname Martin and a nephew called Keeling so they maybe a good clue to Harriet's maiden name. HO107 2121 402 13
Do have a look at the tips on Beginners' Board as to which free sites you can search. We all use the IGI on www.familysearch as a first port of call and also Genuki.org.uk so you should be able to find lots on there - as the replies have indicated.

Thnks for all that!
Im a total airhead and didnt pick up on that as his sister in law it would make her harriets sister.
I finally found a marriage record. 22 April 1845 in south frodingham, york. unfortunately no listing of parents names on there.
There first child was born in 1843. So he may have been born out of wedlock bythe looks of this.
However marriage certificate gives birthdate as 1815. so search for birth record may continue.
