Title: old llantwit cemetery
Post by: llangatwg on Thursday 03 February 11 18:58 GMT (UK)
I was wondering whether anyone knows how to access the monumental inscriptions or indeed as to who is buried in this part of the cemetery.  I went to swansea archives and it appears they only have records for the new cemetery.  There is a gentleman one can phone but he wants a great deal of money to give you the info required granted in goes to charity but £20  for a look up is quite a lot.  can anyone help please thanks

Hi Llangatwg

Do you mean St.Illtyd Church, Llantwit Juxta Neath?

There's this site:

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~waggy/textfile.htm

and for the new part:

Kind Regards

There are copies of the Parish Registers which include the burial registers for Llantwit Juxta Neath and for Neath (which I think are the for new cemetery )  on the shelf in large books to look at at the Swansea Archives. I looked at them this week before visiting the cemetery (the cemetery on  the opposite side of the road to the council cemetery).

Unfortunately though there is no burial plan, so if the grave is not marked with a headstone you probably will NEVER find it. There are also a lot of  graves just above the church in a jungle of Japanese knotweed that are innaccessible without a machete!

It's worth checking with the GFHS to see if they have transcribed the graves.

In addition to the list of some gravestones in the old Llantwit churchyard, Brian Wagstaffe made a plan of some of the churhyard which is online here:
