for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.In crossing the open under direct fire to bring a stretcher to a wounded officer. He succeeded in doing this unaided, and was directly responsible for the officers safety..Later,he returned again and again to an exposed position, and carried in the wounded unaided. His example was magnificent.

thank you all,how do i confirm ,that these report's are of my grandffather.i.e.full name and address etc.there could be more than one martin thornton
-
There were three Martin Thorntons who came up in the original search. My link was the only one who was in RAMC. His regimental number 38791 on his medal card is the same as the one in Gorton boys link to the London Gazette
I would be 100% sure that this was the man you seek.

The majority of foreign awards to British troops were made by the British Army. The allies shared a number of awards with other members of the Alliance for distibution. So it will be because he was awarded the DCM twice. rather than a specific third action.
Here it is - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30096/supplements/5205
If you go to page 5202 it says it was for the Bronze Medal for Military Valour - and you should also read page 5199. If you print off these three pages and staple them together they make a nice present for his descendants. Ditto with the DCM set.

Hi i need help regarding Medals ,if a soldier was in two regiments which Reg and number would have gone on his Medals. Many thanks.
-
Usually the one he served in last I believe - but if you have his medal card there should be a mark next to the medal and repeated next to the number and regiment inscribed for that medal. The most common mark used was a + with circles in each of the quarters,
