Hello Sancti, can you transcribe the Cockburn Stark inscription please
-
It is for Thomas Cockburn and his wife Ann Stark
Also John Cockburn and Margaret B Wands
-
Cheers Sancti that's great. John was the son of Thomas.
Just to fill in some info "Thomas Cockburn was a Private in the 2nd. Batallion 91st. Regiment (Argylls) between 1811 and1818. He was wounded in the thigh at the battle of Bergen op Zoom in 1814. He was also present at the Battle of Waterloo although the Regiment was held in reserve. He was awarded the Waterloo Medal and granted the Waterloo Pension of 2 extra years on his pension."
Thanks again.

Hi Sancti, my name is Doug. I am interested in photos of the following stones: Andrew Orr/Helen Hamilton, James Weir/Jane Jack, John Weir/Mary Pettigrew, James Weir/Isabel Faulds, there is one there that has John Orr, James Orr/Janet Thompson, John Orr Jr/Catherine Easton Cochrane. I beleive this one is beside or is part of the same stone, as James Orr/Mary Wilkenson. James Orr and Janet Thompson are my 3rd great grandparents. Any reply would be helpful.
Regards
Doug.

Hello Sancti,
I noticed that you have taken pictures of some gravestones in the Cambuslang Parish Churchyard. I do not know the burial dates of those interred there. My great uncle Donald Allan b 1886 died 19 June 1954 at a hospital in East Kilbride but his home address was Newton Cambuslang. He and his wife Margaret Plunkett had lived there for many years. I'm wondering if you would know where he/they might be buried.
Kind regards, Nan
-
Westburn cemetery would be closest to Newton
-
Thank you for that tip Sancti. Could I ask you one more question please? Is there a way that I could search online for confirmation that Donald Allan was buried at Westburn?
Kind regards, Nan
-
No index available online but if you contact South Lanarkshire Council cemeteries section they will confirm and provide a lair number

Thank you Sancti. I sent off an email and now await confirmation.
Kind regards, Nan

Nan, there is a way, not on-line though, there is a ledger and at this moment it's kept in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, the department that deals with cremations etc, can't quite remember the exact name of the department, down a side street (John Street??) on the opposite side of Asda, Glasgow Rd, Blantyre

If you are refering to Kirkhill Cemetery, can I add the names, Andrew Thomson (1850) & Jane Barrie (1873) gravestone still in good condition and easily to read (plot 51, I think)
-
Hello Sancti,
Your guess that my relatives Donald and Margaret Allan of Newton Cambuslang were buried in Westburn Cemetery was correct. I received confirmation today from the South Lanarkshire Council, cemeteries division. Thank you for your help
Best regards, Nan

You are doing a great job Sancti.
Could I just add something?
I also have ancestors who are buried in Kirkhill Churchyard and I also have photos of my family graves.
I already knew the location of these graves because I found them in The Monumental Inscription Book for Cambuslang Churchyard
The book was printed in 1972.
It includes a plan of the cemetery, and all the "legible" inscriptions that were on the stones at time of print.
When I photographed my family headstones in 2009, I discovered that some have little or no wording left at all.
My ggg grandparents grave is not on your list, because at 2009, hardly a single, legible word remains on their headstone ... but it was legible in 1972. It is printed in the book!
EDIT: forgot to add
Jackson (from your list) is also my family.
The wording on this stone has also eroded somewhat since 1972

Hi
While searching for a online resource for Cambuslang Grave index, it linked me to here so wondering if you can help. Really looking for any graves that have a Welsh buried there, especially Robert Welsh (1878-1945) & Joanna Craig Wesh, nee Maxwell (1881-1952). Any help much appreciated.

They may be buried in Westburn or Rutherglen cemetery
-
Stewart,
If you have exact dates of death, it may be worth looking at death announcements in The Glasgow Herald.
The newspaper is not indexed or searchable by keyword but, it may be worth looking at issues covering a few days after the death.
(On both years, the death announcements are on the front page)

What was their address when they died?
-
Hi
They lived at 25 Grahams Buildings or known locally as the Square, Halfway, Cambuslang.
His father, Robert Welsh also died 18 Nov 1927, 566 Hamilton Road, Cambuslang.
Any help much appreciated, thankyou.

Myself and another guy uploaded hundreds of gravestones details for Cambuslang (Kirkhill) Cemetery on to Find a Grave and I dont recall a Welsh; Westburn opened in the mid 1890's, there is an old ledger in an office in nearby Blantyre which contains all the internments for Westburn, which includes family signatures and plot costs etc etc
-
Thanks Everyone
Yes, tried Findagrave, to be honest, they were poor so I guess they had a cheap headstone, and that headstone is long gone. I've found that with a few grave plots for my family, where the headstone has been removed. Shame really, I wish the church took more care with grave headstones and plots years ago, feel upset when they lay the headstones down because of health & safety (in case it falls on a very small person).
I was wondering if there were burial records, payment records etc or graveyard maps for the Cambuslang cemeteries? Would the local council hold them or National Records office?

I have MacDermid ancestors who lived in Cambuslang
I don't know which graveyard they would be buried at
Some lived in an area called Burns butt in late 1890.'s to early 90's
They were poor so wouldn't have had grand gravestone.s
But if anyone does come across Malcolm or Duncan MacDermid father and son who both died 1910 I.d be grateful
The work you.ve done is amazing .
-
Bridgidmac,
Unless I am misunderstanding, there is a family called McDermid on both 1891 and 1901 census returns.
The head of household was a cloth lapper called Malcolm b1862 and his son Duncan was born in 1883.
The family did live at Burn Butts but, this is an area of Kenmuir in Old Monkland rather than Cambuslang.
This home would be near to or part of Shettleston,
There are also Military and Australian travel docs for a man named Malcolm bc 1894 who fits the profile of another son
Both these docs appear to belong to the same man due to him having the same occupation
Edit:
Military docs also found for Walter McDermid b1897 who fits the 1901 census profile.
Both Malcom and Walter lived at the same address, mother was called Jane/Jeannie.
Walter died in WW1 1916
-
Thanks Anne
Yes that is the right family
I'd assumed burns butt was cambuslang as several births and marriages or as birth place on census are recorded as at cambuslang
I.m told that tthe areas of old monkland overlap s cambuslang
Great grandm a jean Kyle b1863 was from cambuslang her father Andrew Ramsey Kyle born there at silverbacks in 1832
Sometimes Mac spelling sometimes macdermid
Andrew Macdermid lived at Dean's at Cambuslang from at least 1907 address given by siblings when they emigrated to usa
Given as address at his death 1964. He married a Elizabeth mcdiarmid so that spelling may be on some graves in the region
Another brother Malcolm d1966 was married there in 1921 but later went to australia
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=719705.msg5636550#msg5636550
Their grandfather was also called duncan born about 1830 married and there was a duncan born to eldest son in 1905
I have posted the search for the macdermid siblings on usa board too
But i.d like to know about more about the two who did stay in Scotland and their ancestors and descendants
Duncan died 1910 aged 27 Carmyl address
Informant brother Andrew registration at baillston
Andrew Kyle macdermid died 1964 aged 73 Cambuslang informant was mcdiarmid intimate friend probably an in law
their father Malcolm the cloth lapper had died in 1910 old monkland just after birth of his 10th child
i.hadn't thought to try and find extra information from graves til I saw this post .
Thanks for all your help .
