Title: Keefe Famine orphan
Post by: stewnkez on Tuesday 01 February 11 04:39 GMT (UK)
I am seeking information on Alice and Anne Keefe, deceased parents Michael and Eliza, who came to Australia on the ship 'William and Mary' in 1849 as famine orphans. The ships list indicates they are from Ballilone, Queens.
Any info. re. famine ophans in general or my 2 girls would be greatly appreciated. :)
Cheers,
Kerry

Hi I hope you had some joy about your Orphan Girls ?

My ancestor was also one of the Irish orphan Girls that came out to NSW. in 1849 aboard the Lismoyne she came from the Carlow workhouse, there should be heaps of information about them on the web.

Regards
Brian Ken

Some info on this link may be of interest.

The girls emigrated under a British government scheme called the Earl Grey Scheme.  4112 girls left Irish workhouses under the scheme which terminated in 1850.

Thank you, I have found all i needed to know on the internet - I was actually researching for my elderly neighbour and was able to give him some very welcome information. The records in Australia are very user friendly and some of the stories very sad but all very inspirational! Such brave young girls.
