This is best searched via Firefox rather than IE, and the most important result for you is:

Unless you are able to find someone who is going to Gloucester in the near future and could look for you, it would probably be worth contacting the Archives to see if they can help.

My son had a schoolfriend who was at Gyde House (as it was called in the 1970s) and he wished he could live there too, as the surroundings were beautiful. Not sure if it's been knocked down now, but certainly all the land has been built on.
Stroud Round Table and Ladies Circle quite often held fetes and things in the grounds to raise money for them and other good causes.

The main website for the Archives seem fine in IE, but the catalogue doesn't always display properly in IE.
If you can't access the first link I gave you, try
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/DServe/DServe.exe?dsqIni=DServeA.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Search.tcl
Type gyde orphanage in the "any text" box, and you should get 7 results, the sixth being D7137. The others may be of interest, but I think this is the one that might have some useful info.

Did you know Gyde orphanage was supposed to be haunted after it closed and was sold the contractors swore they could still hear the children running about!!

The BBC made a program from the Gyde house during the 1960's, it is possible to request a copy from them, sorry I do not remember the name of the series that it came from

Hi Svelgen,
Thank you for your reply. I will get in touch with the BBC.
Thank you,
Gerogina

The BBC series was called " A job worth doing", having had some more thought on the subject it was more likely to be in the 1970's

Gyde Orphanage was, I think, Gyde House - the Gydes were a notable Painswick family. I understand the building has now been converted into flats. It should be possible to get photos...... I'll try if you're interested :)

That article is interesting, especially the bit where the builder assumes children were abused there. I wonder when that was. When my son used to play with some of the children from the home - actually up at the home - in the 1970s, there was never any suggestion of anyone being abused.

Hello AngelaR,
I found the article very interesting.
My mother and her brother were at the Orphanage in 1921? She was about 6 years old. Always told me she had a great time and fond memories of Gyde.
Thank you for the offer of taking some photo's, however my husband and I have been to Gyde House, to find it was now flats. I very kind resident gave us a copy of Gyde House booklet 2ND, and low and behold a photo of my mother's brother.
Kind regards
Georgina.
