Hi
Christina Balfour DeGernier born 12 SEP 1890 in Greenmarket, St. Clements, Dundee, was the wife of my great grand uncle. Daniel Macgregor. (so she would be my gr. grand aunt). She was married to Daniel Macgregor on 27 January 1911 in Dundee. Sadly he died in World War One. My great Grandmother never really got over his death as he was her favourite brother. Her name was Catherine Macgregor. I do know that my Gr. Grandmother visited the “De Gernier’s” in Dundee in the late 1940/50, possibly early 60’s but she died in 1965 and very little is known about this side of the family…how sad. I know this because my Mother remembers her Granny going visiting to Dundee. I do not know if “Teenie” and Daniel had children or if she ever married again but any information would be greatly appreciated.
This is the only info I have:
Gustav Degernier (born abt 1869 brussells, france) married Christina Balfour 27 DEC 1889 Dundee
children:
william Balfour Degernier born 22 APR 1889 in St.Clements, Dundee
Christine Balfour Degernier born 12 SEP 1890 St.Clements, Dundee
Hortence De gernier born abt 1892 in St. Clements, Dundee
Betsy Degernier born abt 1893 in St. Clements, Dundee
Mary A Degernier born abt 1896 in St. Clements, Dundee
Eliza A Degernier born abt1897 in St.Clements, Dundee
I have them all living together in 1901 at 7 Castle Court, St Clement district, Dundee.
I think Gustavs parents were Thomas (Antoine) De gernier and Hortense Camilla Verplanche or Verplanke.
as I say ANY info would be greatly appreciated.
I have added a little info I found previous, here is the link:

Kind regards,

Eddie De gernier lived at 28 Moncur Crescent in Dundee. He died late 1980s early 1990s. He is buried with his wife in a beautiful chuchyard overlooking River Esk. He was a lovely quiet man with a terrific head of white hair who collected antiques.
I went with him to Toronto in 1970 to visit his son Dougie who I believe is still there. Dougie has 2 sons - Bradley and Steven

Hi,
Just recently joined the forum and I am also researching the De Gernier's from Dundee, interested in your post as to who is who, at the moment I have the following:
Antoine De Gernier b:1846, Belgium
Hortense C R Verplanche b:1851, France
Marriage: 1872, France
Children:
John De Gernier
Mary Ann De Gernier
Fanny De Gernier
Antoine De Gernier
Anne Hortense Camile Verplanche De Gernier
Francois De Gernier
Any comments would be appreciated, currently looking at Belgian & French Births & Marriages.
Thanks & regards,
Billy

Hi Billy,
Antoine and Hortence had eleven children as far as I have discovered.
Gustav Georg b. 1869 Armentieres, France (therefore born before parents' marriage--- unless he was adopted.)
Felix Edouard 1873 Armentieres
John 1875
Mary Ann 1877
Fanny 1879
Antoine 1882-1883
Antoine 1884
Ann Hortence 1886
Ellen 1888
Grace 1889
Francois 1894
These last nine born in Dundee.
Perhaps as you are accessing French records, you could verify the birthdates of the elder two.
I am currently trying to find the family of Auguste De Gernier (1890-1936) who married Jean Burns in 1926 (Dundee). I do not know whether they had any children.
Am also trying to find the younger children of Louis De G. (1882-1941) and Mary Millar.
So far I have
Maria, 1902,
Edward 1904
Louis 1907
Mary Millar 1909
Henri Felix 1913
A John George, 1911, may have been theirs.
Hope the earlier facts are of help,
MairiD

Hi again Billy,
I have Antoine born 1845 Molenbeek. Perhaps you could check this.
In my earlier post I typed Hortence instead of the correct Hortense. Apologies.

Hi Mairi,
Thanks for responding, I have went through the 1891 & 1901 Census for Antoine & Hortense and could find only the children below as resident with them at Tindals Wynd, Dundee, I will search the 1911 Census for further info and let you know.
Children:
John De Gernier, B:1875
Mary Ann De Gernier, B:1877
Fanny De Gernier, B:1879
Antoine De Gernier, B:1884
Anne Hortense Camile Verplanche De Gernier, B:1886
Francois De Gernier, B:1894
Other De Gerniers I have come across are listed below residing at the Greenmarket in 1891,
Gustav De Gernier B:1869, France
Christina De Gernier B:1869, Fife
William De Gernier, B:1889
Christina De Gernier, B:1890
As above with the additional info for 1901 Castle Court,
Hortence, B:1892
Betsy, B: 1894
Mary A, B:1896
Eliza A, B:1898
William Balfour, Lodger
Not sure if any of it makes sense or is any help to you, have confirmed the first part through documentation, will see what I can come up with and let you know on the remainder.
Are you in the Dundee area?
Regards,
Billy

Hi Billy,
No I am not in the Dundee area.
The census data gives you the people living in those years, at particular places.
Four (if not five) of Antoine and Hortense's children died young so you need to look at birth and death certificates as well as census documents.
Gustav, the eldest, was married with a family, hence the different address in 1891.
The whereabouts of Felix Edouard, the second son, is a mystery. I have found no evidence of him going to Dundee.
Mairi.

I have Antoine born 1845 Molenbeek. Perhaps you could check this.
Remember, if you are 'calculating' a date of birth from a census age, that the census was usually taken around the end of March/beginning of April. So someone who was aged, say, 35 in the 1881 census would have been born between April 1845 and March 1846.
In other words, if you 'calculate' the year of birth by subtracting 35 from 1881, and get 1846, it is three times more likely to have been 1845. So it's best to put it down as "1845/6" until you get an actual birth or baptism record.

UPDATE:
Christina (Teenie) Balfour De Gernier did marry my great -grand uncle Daniel MacGregor and they had 3 children
