Hello, I have posted on the website before and had some help on my family tree from you lovely people....
I am still searching for a marriage of Charles Edwards and Ellenor (surname unknown).
Ellenor was born in Llandrillo abt 1792 and I have her on the 1851 and 1861 cencus abode Sontley lodge Farm, Marchwiel.
Charles Edwards is her husband born abt 1785 Overton, but I have found a baptism of a Charles Edwards 1786 on family search website at Hanmer Church, parents Ellis and Susanna Edwards...I am unsure if this is the correct Charles baptism as he did call 2 of his children Ellis and Susanna which is a popular thing to call children after parents.
Also found a death of Sarah Edwards d.o.d 1786 with same parents Ellis and Susanna and when i looked on the wrexham graveyard search website it mentions Ellis and Susanna are her parents too and they lived in Halghton village.
I would like information on Charles and Elleanor's wedding. I know from a previous post's reply they did not marry in Marchwiel or Overton...maybe they married in the Llandrillo region or Hanmer.
I would imagine they married between 1810 - 1816 as their first Son George is born 1816.
Any help on this topic would be lovely or any info on Charles baptism at Hanmer Church, would like to know if Charles had any siblings with same parents Ellis and Susanna.
Thank You :)

Due to the fire at Hanmer Church in 1889 there are no Marriage records available for Hanmer between the years of 1787 and 1813.See the following from Genuki;

Thanks for that information, what a shame. Apart from free bmd and ancestry and family search are there any other free websites to search for marriages/deaths/births before 1837 would you know?
-
As far as the Baptisms of Charles and Eleanor's children are concerned it would appear that most of them will be included in the Marchwiel Parish Registers-Baptisms 1813-1837.Whether or not the mother's maiden name would be included is very much open to question!Someone on this Site may have the booklet transcribed by Clwyd FHS.
There would appear very little online for the area concerned, well nothing that I have noticed since I posted my first reply!

William Russell Jones.

Hi poppyfields
Have you tried Freereg? There are some Flintshire records on there.

It is perhaps worth noting that as well as the children of Charles and Eleanor Edwards showing in 1851 that there was at least one other child.George born c 1817 is showing as a brother-in-law in 1871 of a Thomas Cheetham given as born in Marchwiel in c 1813 a widower.
RG10/5651/191/1.
In 1861 Thomas is shown as married to an Ann born in Marchwiel in c 1819.
RG9/4279/60/10.
On North Wales BMD there is a probable marriage in 1839 at Marchwiel St Marcella of a Thomas Cheetham and an Ann Edwards.

William Russell Jones.

Hi
Yes I have George in the family tree. He never married and must have lived with Thomas Cheetham when Ann died. On the cencus of George living with Thomas Cheetham, George is noted down as an imbecile!?!
Not sure where or when George died but I visited Marchwiel church over the weekend and found Ann Cheetham & Thomas Cheetham graves which was interesting.
Thanks :-)

There is a death of a George Edwards given in the Jan/Feb/Mar quarter of 1891 in the Wrexham District,Volume 11b,Page 199.He is given as born in c 1818.I've only found George up to the 1881 Census.

William Russell Jones.
-
Yes I only have George up to 1891 so maybe this record is his...how do you trace graves where people are buried, would you know?
Thanks

Clwyd FHS have transcibed the MIs for Marchwiel St Marcella.

-
Can i ask where you got the Wills for the Cheetham family members?
is there anyway of searching for any Edwards family i.e. Charles...where would i look?
Thanks
-
http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=searcharchivaldatabases.
Wills only go up to 1858.
Ancestry probate index starts at 1861, so there is a gap .
A bit more on the family from another thread.

Jill Rose has looked for a marriage , but drawn a blank locally.
I`ll just copy her reply to me so you all can see.
It seems George and Elizabeth were not baptised at Marchwiel
266 Marchwiel Vol 4 Baptisms & Burials 1813-1837, Marriages 1814-1837
` 7 Feb 1823 bap/o Charles s/o Charles (farmer) & Ellen, Sontley
23 May 1824 bap/o John s/o Charles (farmer) & Eleanor, Sontley Lodge

14 Oct 1827 bap/o Ellen d/o Charles (farmer) & Ellen, Lodge
17 May 1829 bap/o Ellis William s/o Charles (farmer) & Eleanor, Sontley lodge
I drew a blank with the marriage of Charles and Ellenor
c.1816 in Marchwiel, Llangollen, Overton, Ruabon, Wrexham
& Holt. Not able to check Erbistock, Bangor-on-Dee and
Gresford because the transcriptions finish at 1812 so that
would mean a visit to one of the Record Offices.
There are quite a lot of Bryngolly's but not spelt like that.
My first find was Bryn Golau nr Pontypridd in Mid. Glam,
the next Bryn Goleu a cairn near Lampeter, Ceredigion.
Then there is Bryn Golau in Llantysilio and another in
Gwyddelwern, and finally Bryn Goleu on the lower part
of the Horseshoe Pass Road from Llangollen. Probably
there are others too.
Next step was to look at the 1851 census.
There I found Ellenor was said to be born in either Llandrillo
or Llantysilio - it is a bit difficult to read.
So on the assumption that it is the Bryn Goleu near
Llantysilio where George, Ann & Elizabeth were
born, and also Ellenor married, it could be worth a look at
the Llantysilio registers but again the transcriptions
are only up to 1812 at the moment.`

Thanks for the info ;D

In Erddig township between Erddig Hall and Plas Grono was and is a large cottage. Towards the end of the 18th c a Robert Lloyd retired here from London .
It is described as ` a beautiful cottage situated on a hanging bank ( Wats Dyke) beneath which ran brooks within the confluance of two of which ( Afon sech and Afon goch ) Plas Grono and it`s grounds are situate.
The descriptions are by `Nimrod` who was the son of Thomas Applerbey.

Have found the marriage of Charles Edwards and Ellinor Thomas on April 18th 1814 at Gresford. The reason it was at Gresford is that Charles was the butler and Ellinor was a housemaid at Erddig Hall and Erddig was in the parish of Gresford. In 1822 he ceased to be the butler and became a farmer on the Erddig estate. Bryngoleu and Sontley were part of the Erddig estate. Charles parents were Ellis Edwards and Susannah Cheetham, married at Marchwiel in 1779. They had 4 children, including Charles who was baptised on Sep 27th 1786 at Hanmer. Their abode was Halghton, which is midway between Overton and Hanmer.
Ellinor Thomas parents were William Thomas and Mary Davies, married at Llandrillo yn Rhos, near Colwyn Bay, in 1782. They had 5 children, including Ellinor who was baptised at Llandrillo yn Rhos Jun 28th 1789.
About Thomas Cheetham and Anne Edwards who are my 2x great grandparents. They both have the same great grandparents ie William Cheetham born 1704 and Sarah born 1708 in Bangor on Dee.
I have more information if you are interested.

Amazing , I ( and others) spent quite a bit of time trying to help Linda, and I know she did a lot of work herself.
I for one would like to know more. Thanks for all this extra detail. :)
-
I'm wondering whether there might be a Mary Edwards connected to this family. She married a John Hanmer at Wrexham Parish Church in 1797.John Hanmer and Mary Edwards are my Greatx3-Grandparents.All of John and Mary's children were born in Overton.
Regards
William Russell Jones.

I do not know of a Mary Edwards of an age for marriage in 1797,sorry.
-
Hi Bindles
Thanks for the great information you have found...much appreciated thanks to everyone who has helped with my family history
;D
-
I`ve had some more inormation from Jill Rose.
I've done a bit of extra 'work' looking at parishes around Hanmer and you may find a few interesting bits under my references 36, 59 & 75.
Also do you think there might be a remote possibility that Jno is a
mis-transcript? Perhaps someone could check the original register
You'd better add EDWARDS 38 Wrexham to the list!

I`m trying to find info on Charles Edwards b1812c who married who married Ellen beeston b.1811c, I have all the info on those two together but am having trouble finding Charles` parents. he was born in Nantwich in cheshire
-
Sorry but none of the Edwards in my tree have connections with Nantwich or the surname Beeston. Unfortunately Edwards is a very common name, especially along the Welsh borders. Happy searching.Regards M.S.
