Hi
I am trying to find a baptism for Grace Glover born c1795 Pudsey Leeds. The problem I have is that I can not find any reference to a Grave Glover being baptised any where around this time so I am well and truely stuck. Grace married John Chadwick in St Peters Leeds in 1817 and consistently shows on all census returns after 1841 (1851, 61, and 71) her place of birth as Pudsey. She died in 1872.
Any help in finding Grace's baptism and parents will be most appreciated.

Is it possibe that she was a widow when she married John ??? , I know from her assumed age its not likely but also not impossible.
Have you seem the marriage entry to confirm or deny ???

I fully sympathize with your situation, having met with it many times in my own family!
Unfortunately from our point of view, the reality is that not everyone baptised their children, then as now. The reasons behind our inability to find specific baptismal records were manifold and included disinterest, an inability or unwillingness to pay the fee, poor record keeping on the part of the parish clerks, the refusal of the minister/clerk to record a baptism because the fee was not paid. Often, if the child was the first born to a couple and they lived outside their family's parish, the infant would taken back to either the mother's or father's parish for baptism.
None of this helps you find what you seek, but may help to explain why you can't uncover Grace Glover's parents.
Did Grace and her husband have children? If so do you know whether or not any were named for his parents and siblings? If some were, then you might be able to extrapolate that one or two were also named for Grace's parents at least. That might give you a clue as to where to look. Do you have any access to Pudsey's parish registers? Perhaps you might find other Glover children who were born and baptised around the same time (give or take ten years or so) with names involved similar to those of Grace and John's children. None of this allows you to know for certain who Grace's parents might have been, but such evidence would be suggestive.
Perhaps Grace's parents were non-conformists around the time that she would have been baptised.
Were any elderly Glovers still around in 1841 dwelling in Pudsey? Depending upon when in their life-cycle Grace's parents had her they might only have been in their 60s at the time of that census. Were there any other Glovers in Pudsey in 1841 or later, more or less of Grace's age? Could there be naming clues among any such persons?

I have looked at the database using just the name 'Glover', there are 400 entries showing various Glover named people who were baptised within the record district covering Pudsey/Calverley.
Any takers for looking up for a female Glover born 1795?
(Just answering my own question here, 4 Grace Glovers baptised but not in the timespan indicated).

I have not physically seen the marriage entry. Unfortunately, as I do not live in Leeds access to the parish records is not easy. At some point I would like to spend a day in Leeds as I have several branches of my family that I would like to investigate. I will certainly make a note to check Grace's marriage status. I think she married in the Parish church (St. Peters) 13 Jan 1817. However, I foolishly did not make a note of my source for this information.

Grace and Ann did have children but this does not help my quest in any way. In fact it makes the problem harder. They had eight known children. 1st son and and last two daughter were baptised in Hunslet. I am not sure where second to last daughter was born she was baptised in Hunslet in 1837 but according to the census returns she was born in 1835. The 1841 census is not reliable on ages so the could be a rounding error. The other children were born in and around Burnley and Padiham. But on the census return the box is ticked for the born in Yorkshire!!
Graces husband was born c1799 Hunslet. There are three John's to choose from - all born within months of one another. And, this is assuming that my ancestor is one of them!!
I am related through Martha Chadwick 4th child 1st daughter. I can't make any progress with her line either. all I know is that she was born in Padiham c1829.
Your idea to look for family members in Pudsey is a good one and I had already thought of this and there are a few possible brothers of Grace one of which has a daughter named Grace. However, without proof that is all it is.

You are possible correct that i have made a similar request for help before. A combination of poor memory, frustration at not being able to move on and in all fairness different people look at different boards at different times so there is always a chance that someone might just have the illusive piece of information that moves you forward. Nothing ventured nothing gained!!
The other possibility regarding Grace is that Grace was her middle name and she was baptised under another name.

could you look see if you have any information to help me with another brick wall? Rachel Corlass (and derivatives) born c1748 parents and location unknown. With such an unusual name it should be relatively easy but with my Leeds lot....... not a chance!!

Thank you for your reply, I have already looked to see if there were any more Glovers who might be family members. When I responded to Ann I did mention that I had found a Grace Glover daughter of William who might be her niece. But what I am looking for is a more definite link to Grace.

In answer to your question - I don't know. Their marriage took place in Leeds and their children were born in Leeds. I assume that Rachel was born in Leeds but.... I do seem to have a few who strayed across the border I have just found one of my Hall's who I thought was baptised in Leeds but in fact the baptism took place in Little Marsden!!

Only birth reference is Grace or Chadwick Glover (submitted entry) 1795 Leeds.
Confirmed marriage 13th Jan 1817 St Peter's Church Leeds
