Title: Help with dating a photo - COMPLETED
Post by: Wooler57 on Sunday 30 January 11 18:53 GMT (UK)
I've inherited a box of family photos, and of course none of them are labelled.  I'm trying to work my way through them to see if I can identify anyone.

I'd be grateful for any help in dating this photo.  Many thanks,

Ian

Hello Ian & welcome.
Thanks for putting up these good scans of the back & front, this is how we like to see them.
The clothes style is typical of the mid- late 1880's but as A & G Taylor boasted as being the largest
photographers in the world quite a bit can be found. With these a good dating clue is when all these
addresses came about.I've just looked at one from my collection dated 1890 which includes Wigan
which is absent on this,so before that date.
The other good news is that this is a Marion Imp Paris card which has a date code.
The not so good news is that we don't fully understand how it was formulated, but on what we think
we know this is dated 1889.

Hi -

This site http://www.clevelandfhs.org.uk/Photographers.htm shows that A&G Taylor were listed at the 106 High Street premises in Stockton in directories of 1884 and 1910-11.

Looks good to tie in with what Jim said.

Many thanks for your help.

Jim, that is remarkably accurate dating.  I’m very impressed that so much can be worked out from the photo.  It will help a lot towards finding the correct family.

I have other “Marion Imp Paris” cards, which I will now look at.  Thanks again,

Ian

Sylvia, are you refering to the 2 babies - I think the one with father is older - see the length of limbs compared with the other babe - but I'd say pushing the 9 months!

Ian - most families have a 2 year gap, so if these are only 1 year, it is a good pointer, but whether they are boys or girls I wouldn't know.

I also wondered about twins, but tend to agree that one of the babies looks around 9 months older than the other.  We don’t have a history of twins in the family.  Either way, it should help to narrow down the options.  If I find anything, I’ll add a comment here,

If you have other MIP's can you put them up like this one as it all helps us to work out the dates.
The studio that was used for this will be in the main frame in the centre of the card.
